I just can't get my head around that. I haven't had the opportunity to test it myself but people seem to have done so...

If the only difference is the display could it be that CRTs (eMac) are less demanding on the CPU?

This could be by way of processor cycles required to produce a given image, refresh rate differences, widescreen aspect of the iMac vs. traditional aspect of CTR, digital output to the FP etc. etc. - just throwin' ideas at this stage.

Alternatively, is the iMac deliberately underclocked (or something) to avoid cooking itself?

everything has a pro and cons..
Personally i prefer flatscreen because it wouldn't spoilt my eye-sight...
however, CRT does...
