I just updated and it's resulted in not being able to launch applications or type.

It's happening across both my accounts on the iMac.

I have tried verifying and repairing permissions on disk utility (There were lots of permissions wrong and at a certain point of repairing them I was asked me to repair the disk - which I then did - however that didn't fix the problem) which I did from a bootable clone backup I have (obviously, because whilst the iMAc does boot up and the curser moves I can't launch any apps.

The menu bar for the finder isn't appearing and I am occasionally getting a finder fault dialogue box.

I really need some help with this.

So you said you booted from a bootable clone, you didn't actually say if it works.
If it does, clone it back to your internal HDD and apply the update via the combo updater or re-install 10.6, update then restore from Time Machine.

DO you mean do a clean install of Snow Leopard again?

The bootable clone works - it's on a separate hard drive and cloned on Super Duper.

I'm not back home now for a few days but will attempt to sort this out on my return.

Yes, I would do a clean install (erase your drive with Disk Utility included in the SL DVD) and then use Migration Assistant to get back whatever you need from your cloned drive.

I would try simply reinstalling first. It'll take you 40 minutes and may fix the issue.

If that doesn't work then try the clean install and migration.

Do you have retail media? If so, run the installer to go back to 10.6.0 (your user accounts will not be touched), and then download and install the 10.6.3 Combo Updater.. Do not use Software Update.

Here's what I'd do:
- Apply the update again. That's basically what used to be called Archive&Install.
- Is it the installation or something in the user account? Try booting in safe mode. Also, try setting up a new admin user account and logging into that.
- If none of that works try another clean install.
- If issues persist it's either a faulty SL disk or a botched clone.

Some advice for next time. Don't risk running into issues with bad clones by relying on some third-party hack when a stable and fast cloning solution is built right into every OS X installation. Although SD and CCC are widely known, they also have a long record of creating botched clones or causing weird issues with their "clones". Especially features like differential cloning are bound to cause problems. A clone is only a reliable clone if it has actually been cloned, i.e. it is a bit-by-bit copy of a FS. Screwing around with the clone like CCC and SD are commonly used to do is only asking for trouble. Fortunately there's no need to resort to CCC or SD because Apple has built an excellent tool right into OS X for free. Check out /Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility > Restore. Check 'erase destination' for a bootable clone.

Boot from the SL DVD. When the installer asks where to install select your SL partition. Install.

Installing now from my SL disc.

hen download and install the 10.6.3 Combo Updater.. Do not use Software Update.

I can't find the 10.6.3 Combo Updater...can anyone help with a link?

Software Update usually suggests the delta update. But in case of trouble you want the combo update.

There were some boot issues specific to the 10.6.3 incremental update, which are not a problem if you use the Combo Update.
