For those of you who care, I just bought my first Mac!
I went whole hog on this PowerBook...15/1.5/128/512/5400/SD
I had a huge fight with my parents about money, so I'm not exactly ecstatic...
...but when this baby comes, boy oh boy!
What shall I name it?
This is so amazing! My first Mac! My first Mac!
Off to watch Petie .
Edit: I didn't purchase AppleCare or extra RAM, but that can always be done later. This is so friggin' exciting! Mac OS X! Holy poop! I'm getting a Mac! I'm getting a Mac!
I have been drooling over Macs since January!

So, did you know that you've posted a total of eight threads on this one in the last 5 days in this forum and an identical thread in the Lounge? Just wondering.

The one in the lounge was to show people that I'm finally a Mac user. This one was to show that my long chain of PowerBook threads is finally over. They serve very different purposes. It's quite simple.

Well congrats you certainly put a thought and effort into the purchase.
Enjoy, of course the Petie movie is a little spastic, but then who here wasn't excited to get their first mac.

Congratulations, I was VERY hesitant to make the switch .. but when i look back .. i have no regrets. I am a happy camper. One only wonders how long before you become a Mac Fanatic. Make sure u take pictures of yourself opening the powerbook box. The attention to detail is insane .. the packaging is gorgeous .. Much like 3g Ipods .. they match so well =P They paid attention to every little thing .. You're going to love your new laptop

Get more ram asap or else you'll be seriously handicapping yourself on a very capable machine.

Congrats! Remember; half the fun is the anticipation. Just finished burning a 2 hour DVD copy from Disk Utility using Disk Image in 17 minutes, not too shabby at 4x speed! I use Sony 4x media, VERY dependable. Hope you enjoy you 15" as much as I am my new 1.5 Ghz 17". If you are into gaming treat yourself to Halo if you've never played it; although a bit jerky at times it is a real movie like adventure action title and a must have. Buy a copy of Diskwarrior but MAKE SURE it is the latest edition or it will not work on the latest 1.5 Ghz Powerbooks. Check Alsoft.com for specifics. You can call toll free. Get a 2 button mouse; it eases the transition for first timers from PC to Mac as well as less wear and tear on your track pad and keeps your hand sweat off the hand rest area. Bluetooth rocks. I have a Microsoft BT but the ultimate in my opinion appears to be comming soon in September:
http://www.macmice.com/themousebt.html
If it works it seems well worth waiting for. In Aluminum silver color too, they say.
Cheers!

Yeah, what is it with the sweat on the hand area?
Congrats on your new Mac. Start saving, this won't be the first and only one you own. I switched last year. Now I own two. I'll be driving past the Apple store today, and it will be REALLY hard not to stop.

Heh... I don't have as much trouble with that as I do with my metal-banded watch... I always take it off to avoid scratches.

No kidding. My PB below has been a horrible spending pit for me... all in the last month: (Sure is fun, though!)
BT Mouse: $60
Shareware: $50
Tom Bihn Bag and sleeve: $200 (Waiting on it... it'd better be worth it at that price... sheesh!)
Soon (maybe?):
1GB RAM: $250
APExpress: $120
Watch out, tavilach... guard your bank account!!!!!

I'll eventually pay $100 for an extra stick of 512 MB. Is this really urgent, though? Don't you think 512 MB is enough for now?
It's also cooler to experience the slowness of 512 MB before you move to 1 GB .
Anyway, I'm assuming that this is just as good as having paid an extra $300 for a 512 MB stick of Apple RAM?

512 will suffice but I'd say it's the minimum that someone should have these days. In so many apps, ram is more important than Ghz. It's like having a Ferrari and only being able to shift between first and second gear.
Cooler to experience 512? Maybe. But I'd say it's more akin to dating an ugly girl, then finding yourself a babe.

Still, it's not like getting myself a stick of Crucial RAM won't do the job, right? Wouldn't that be just as good as getting it from Apple, and $200 cheaper? Does anyone actually buy 1 GB from Apple?

Yeah, Apple ram is overpriced. Way overpriced. And it appears that prices have fallen on 1GB sticks recently as well.

All I really need is another stick of 512 MB, though. Isn't 1 GB plenty?

"All I really need is another stick of 512 MB, though. Isn't 1 GB plenty?"
Did you order 1 512 DIMM in your PB or 2x256?
If the latter is the case you will only be able to get a max of 768 MB RAM since you'll have to take 256 out before you put a 512 in.
768 or 1 GB RAM should still be plenty.

I ordered 1 SO-DIMM, so all I need is another 512 MB stick .

Just go to CompUSA before the end of the week and they have the 512mb chip for $95 - $30 rebate. I put it in my new Powerbook and it works just great. If I remember right it was PNY (I'm at work so I can't look at it).
