Can I burn a Dual Layer DVD with my 15" 1.5gig alumbook?

If not, could someone please direct me to a cheap external dual layer dvd burner?

would something like that work with the mac? it says that it's OS compatablity is only various windows versions...could it still work with the mac?

Only if you use Toast. Currently Panther doesn't support dual layer burning. Once it does then iMovie and iDVD should also be updated to allow longer movies. Unless Apple worries movie pirates might take advantage of the software.

If you want to get a bare DVD burner for your Mac, get a Pioneer brand, as they are fully supported by OS X. You still can't burn dual layer DVDs using Apple's built-in software, but you can using Toast. The Pioneer DVR-108 is about $80 shipped from NewEgg right now.

You'd have to get an external case for it, though. That'll run you $30-$40. And then Toast Titanium is something like $80 (not sure though). So the LaCie one is actually quite a good deal, IF you want to make use of the included Toast Titanium software.

I have an external firewire cd-rw drive from lacie right now. I've already voided the warenty by opening the case up (was just curious what it looked like inside). From what i can tell it wouldnt be a problem, but could I open that up and swap out the cd-rw drive and replace it with one of those dvd drives? I'm assuming its all the same, but thought i'd ask before I went off and tried to actually do it. Thats a much cheaper option than $200 for a new one (already have toast).

Let me just chime in and agree--Pioneer is the way to go with Macs. They're supported well, and you can hack the firmware easily to allow faster burning & regionless play.
