I just handed in my mbp for repair the second time in an apple store in London. Apparently they leave the machine cold ten days before they have a look at it, order parts etc. I'm wondering if this is because they want to give a preference to their customers that have bought apple care? I find the practice a bit dubious..

They probably have a backlog of work that's ahead of your machine. Apple would not tolerate the kind of stupid business practice you suggest, and they'd probably have to disclose that sort of thing in the fine print (thus making it very public knowledge) if they did.

Anyway, there is NO service facility that drops everything for a customer just because that customer feels his repair is "vital." And neither are they making you wait more than necessary. You just have to wait your turn.

Ten days is nuts. You don't have to take it to the Apple Store to get fixed. Take it to any Apple Authorized repair provider. Find someone who values your business and will make fixing your machine a priority.

I would certainly call Apple directly and complain. I don't know about London, but in the US Apple will overnight a prepaid shipping box to you, fix it in a day or two and send it back.

There is apparently a problem with the company Apple used to use to fix laptops in Europe. This seems to have created havec and backlogs with apple tech centers.

Note that it's still NOT the London store withholding service from you... I had heard about the problems in Europe, but I thought they had been resolved...

And (with the European service problems) I agree with SierraDragon about the overnighted return box; if you can get the machine back, go this route and you'll be without your computer for a lot less time.
