My girlfriends old 14" ibook G4 has a bad touchpad, which now has completely stopped functioning. I've tried looking on ebay for a replacement, but all I see are G3 assemblies with the keyboard frame, speakers and touchpad.

Does anyone know if the G3 assemblies are identical to the G4 assemblies for the 14" model?

I don't know the answer to your question but one thing to look at is whether the trackpad surface looks raised. There should be a noticeable depression from the case to the pad surface. On my ibook the left corner closest to the spacebar is often raised up and just gently pushing it back down fixes it (after 30 seconds where the mouse goes nuts).
