A couple of apps are showing up in the finder windows as folders (Mail, Image Capture). I've tried going into "show info" to see if I could get them back to being clickable apps using the extension, but no luck.

Any ideas, or utilities that might fix this? (BTW - I have tried fsck -y, no change).

Thanks,
Sinemac

This is a very frustrating bug in Apple's installer program.

If you've moved Mail, Image Capture, etc. the installer is -- amazingly -- too dumb to notice and go and find out where you put them. So instead it leaves only the updated parts -- which is *not* helpful.

You can:

1. Delete the folders, delete your 10.1.3 receipt, move the apps into the root level of the Applications folder, and download the 10.1.3 upgrade all over again,

or

2. If you're feeling brave, use the contextual menu to open and examine the package contents of apps that were not updated correctly, then fold the updated parts into the proper place.

(If you've deleted them, you can use Charles S.'s terrific app Pacifist to pluck out the right files from Apple's standalone installer -- when they release it in a day or two -- and extract the updated parts again.)

Either way, it's a completely insulting and utterly lazy way for Apple's installer to act. Everybody e-mail 'em on this one.

This doesn't seem to work. Now the old app. thinks it's a folder. Any suggestions?

Say you've moved mail.app >>> CTRL click on the app icon and choose SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS. Then you will see a new window open up with other subfolders....

Where those "Apps that are Now folders" open them.. Add whatever content is in them to the "CONTENTS" of the above apps.

Hope that helps...

I got this after the 10.1.2 update and I kept the older versions.

Moving the contents of a package didn't seem to work for me.. I hope having 10.1.1 versions isn't going to cause a problem this time round.

This is a pretty silly bug and it has usability implications - I don't want to keep stuff like iPhoto and Mail in the root of Applications.

Okay, well now that I've moved a whole bunch of files around, I'm wondering if I've moved the right things in the right direction... can someone tell me what the most current version of Mail is? (Mine is now showing 1.1(v481) - I didn't check what I had before.)

Thanks,
Sinemac

Yes, yes. I know. But I'm either not being able to put the new contents into the old package, or, if I can do that, the app. still thinks it's a folder.
