Well, glad somebody asked. Answers via the
[email protected] mailing list solved a couple of things. My slightly edited post to that list as follows :
<Using Apple's suggested method to start X11 I was getting the following :
[dsl***-***-***:~] mac4% /Applications/X11.app
/Applications/X11.app: Permission denied.
Double clicking the X11 icon in /Applications brought up xterm but nothing worked.
or trying this :
[dsl ***-***-***:~] mac4% open-x11 gimp
[dsl ***-***-***:~] mac4%
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: :0
No good.
Some wonderful folks at Apple set me straight.
Terminal command should be "open /Applications/X11.app" Seems as though it SHOULD be the same as double clicking the icon but in my case it was not. After double clicking the icon xterm would appear but trying to start gimp would only produce a "command not found".
In xterm I can now launch gimp with no problem.
Thank you Apple....>
Hope this helps.
