I have Jaguar running on an 800 mhz iMac with 768 MB of RAM, and Calculator of all apps is dog slow (just where did that expression come anyway from considering how dogs run very fast? ) Anyway, while I like the new interface and expanded features of Calculator I'm going back to PCalc. Why? Because there is a good half second lag time between clicking a button or pressing a number key and the appearance of the number in the Calculator window. PCalc works instantly the way it should. For such a simple application the only explanation I can think of is lazy programming pure and simple. This is pretty pathetic!

But other than that, and the fact that the VPN client isn't working for me, Jaguar is a really great update!

If you can do better which I am sure you could.
Why don't you go buy Simson Garfinkel's book
on Cocoa. It shows how to write a calculator.

It's instantaneous on my computer. But do you know how I could fix my 'random freeze' problem? Thanx!

Good, but I was trying to make a point, so you should have used it.

Clean.

The Calculator is just a small utility. There's no exuse for it not to be blazing fast on everyone's machine, regardless of their hardware.

The Calculator app must be optimised for 350mhz G3s, cause it works great here. :???:

Works great on my G4/867: instant in everything. A little lag on my Lombard.

Same here - when I enter numbers quickly, quite a bit of lag "builds up" on my powerbook 667

Works fine on a PowerBook G3/400 Pismo. I did a clean install and restored my home folder and applications from a backup rather than the OS X Installer Archive.

So is 4^0.5 working for everybody else?

Maybe I'm doing something wrong then.

I believe you are perceiving as slowness is due to the calculator only responding to the buttons on mouse up. That is, if you click on a calc button, it will only register in the display when you release the mouse button. If you use the keyboard, there is a built in delay for each keypress...so there is a cumulative effect of delay if you enter data quickly.

This is definitely a problem which should be fixed, and it's simple; Calculator should accept input on mouse *down*, and have a pref for "flashing" the keys, so there's no wasted animation cycle when entering data quickly (I think flashing each button with the standard blue halo would work fine)

Works fine for me; hit 4, then the y^x button, then enter 0.5...out pops 2.

Since nobody else seemed to have this problem, I tried the usual suspect - Apple's lousy localization. And indeed:

If the number formatting is set to U. S then 4^0.5 yields 2 as the result. Set the number formatting to German and restart Calculator and 4^0,5 is suddenly 1.

Yeah, in Dutch I get the same result. In fact 4^0,5 or 9^0,5 or whatever is interpreted as 4^0. Wrong, but it found the answer plenty fast on my QS933 (clean install).
