I have a G4 tower at work that will not recognize the Firewire Cd-rw (que) nor the Firewire scanner attached to it. I've checked for Firewire updates, reinstalled the software for both the cd-rw & the scanner and finally nuked the cpu by formatting the hd. The G4 still won't recognize either device.

What could be wrong? My only thoughts are the Firewire chip died-not likely or the firmware patch I did a couple of the weeks ago has caused something.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

p.s. both devices work great on other cpus

It sounds as if you are daisy chaining you're scanner to your RW drive. Have you checked to see if they work plugged in alone? I have a QPS drive and what helps me is to install a clean install and just install the OEM Toast software and see if the drive is recognized. If they don't work alone, then you may have to try to replace the machines or something....

Try the Apple system profiler under the apple menu and look under devices and volumes. See if your machine can see the device at all. If it can, then it is probably a driver issue.

You should also try booting from the hardware test CD that came with your machine and run the extended test to see if you Firewire port is OK.

Try these tests and post your results.
