As far as I know there is no glue or clips, just friction, basically.

Can't be done -- unlike the iBooks, the color is basically part of the plastic and not painted on.

The May, 2003 Mac Addict has a tip for opening the iPod, it's on page 62.

Good luck...

I have a broken iPod and I would like to get rid of it. It plays fine but it won't connect to a computer anymore so I have been stuck with the same mp3s since October. I am reluctant to sell it because it has all of my music and my contacts on there. If I could get someone else's iPod to put my iPod's HD into and wipe it clean (or load it up with whatever the customer wants) that would be good but my sister's iPod is still under warrantee and she wouldn't be too thrulled with my taking hers apart.

I've taken mine apart. No glue. Just some tiny torx screws that keep the board attached to the face. I've put it back together without those screws (they aren't necessary).

Simple........

You need to resolder the firewire connector Then it will be good as new

I have a dead 5Gb ipod. I took it to the Apple store and they said it has to do with the hard drive.

Does anybody know where can I puchase a new 1.8" toshiba drive?

Can I swap out the old 5gb for a 20gb toshiba drive?

good luck... I think apple is the only one who can get those drives and that's why no other mp3 player has them.

The drives retail for more than a new iPod (Apple buying in bulk can cut a deal) So there is no point.

ohh it's a lot smaller then that. it's a 1.5" not a 2.5"

The perfect device is a credit card

squeeze around your ipod and find a spot where the case slips a little, stick the card in, work your way around, and it'll break loose.

A Japanese guy I know tried taking the 30GB drive from the new iPods and putting it into the 5GB. The drive was too big to fit into the case properly. He tried forcing it into the case by trimming a few things inside, but then it stopped working. So I don't think it is such a great idea, even if you could find the drives.

See here (in Japanese).

It appears his problem was really just one of space limitations.

After all, Keita put the 5gb into the new iPod case and it worked. If he had been able to machine a back case for the old iPod with greater depth to fit, the 30gb would also have worked, I imagine.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Certainly true, but if you can't physically fit the drive into the case, it doesn't seem like a great idea for a mod to me. I doubt most people want to have to make some sort of makeshift case to hold their ipod internals. That, and the cost of the drive itself, makes it kind of pointless.

so pray tell what can people do to the iPod to mod it decently and noticably instead of disc space which as we have all figuered out the only way to do it plausibly is toput a smaaler drive into a larger case (eg 5Gb into a 15Gb case) and wat is the point in that?

I'm not sure there is anything that you can really do -- I've never seen much of anything with regard to iPod mods. I think I did see one guy who changed the color of the LCD, though.
