In our studio we need to some fairly simple 3D visualising, and we have Photoshop CS4 Extended. As the app itself can't make models to your exact dimensions, what would be the easiest to use and hopefully cheapest method of making the simple models to import into CS4?

Just to clarify, say I need to visualise a box for a product, that is 3" x 4" x 6" - I need to make a 3D model to those exact dimensions, save it in a format that CS4 likes and then apply my graphics and lighting etc in CS4.

Any help much appreciated!

Have you tried the free version of Google SketchUp? I haven't the specs to see if PS can import SU info, but it's worth a shot.

There is actually a little confusion here - a 3D model is not compatible with a 2D program like Photoshop. Sketchup is a cheap place to start but it is going to come down to what quality you need too. If you want quality then there is no cheap option.

Yes, there seems to be some confusion.

Photoshop Extended can import, work with and render 3D objects, professionals will know this, but it's not common knowledge otherwise.

For the OP, I would suggest something cheap like Carrara or even Cheetah 3D to create the model, you will get exactly the same quality as top end apps.

There's also POV-Ray which is free.

Edit: Nevermind, that's just for rendering.
