I get atleast 8 hours with my 15gig iPod at work. Probably closer to 9 hours.
Some skipping of songs, but for the most part I do not use the backlight.

My 20 GB (2G) iPod runs at least 7 hours playing standard-length 320 kbps AAC files, and a little less than 3 playing AIFF files. There isn't enough memory to cache an entire AIFF song, so the HD accesses frequently while playing AIFFs. I tried that last summer in the hopes of avoiding the toneless bass of MP3, and it worked fine except for the battery life on my iPod. AAC's bass is as rich as AIFF, as far as I can hear.
Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.

How long does the battery last if u play the following.

74-80min AAC track (continuous-no pauses)
74-80min AIFF track (continuous-no pauses)
74-80min MP3 track (continuous-no pauses)

I don't have any single 3min type tracks, only long DJ mix's.

Sounds like the iPod has a cache memory that buffers small tracks to conserve the battery, is this effective for tracks that would be 80+meg?

I've never used AIFFs (personally I don't see the point in a portable device -- you're unlikely to be able to tell the difference between high bitrate AAC and AIFF). But I have used Audible.com files that are over 130MB long with no perceptible difference in battery life. I don't know if it handles them differently from AIFFs or what.

I think I get pretty close to the 8 hours under normal use (probably between 7 and 8).
