Dogs used as shark bait
http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,2-2005450117,00.html
Shows image of dog with hook through snout
By IAN HEPBURN
STRAY dogs are being skewered on hooks and dragged behind boats as live shark bait, The Sun can shockingly reveal.
The cruel practice takes place on French-controlled Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, where Prince William spent two holidays.
A six-month-old labrador pup was recently found ALIVE with a huge double hook through its snout - like the dog above - and another through a leg.
The pup was found in a coastal creek and is thought to have somehow freed itself from a fishing line.
But other dogs and kittens have been chomped up and swallowed by sharks.
The RSPCA plans to petition the French government, demanding an end to the hideous torture.
================================================== ======
So much for French "Culture"
Why haven't the proud 'moral' french put a stop to this?
i guess they are more backwards and brutal than originally thought.
reminds me of the islamoterrorists using stray dogs as weapons.
The terrorists and the french.............hmmmmmmm..............

You can bet Brigitte Bardot is all over this...
Reunion is about as "French-culture" as Guam is "American-culture", or Hong Kong "British-culture".
But hey, anything to make a brainless stab against them nasty, nasty Frenchies, eh?
They hate your Fren^Heedom Fries.

Looks like a good Photoshop job to me, although if it's true, whomever instigated it should have hooks put through their jaws and be dragged behind a boat in shark-infested waters.

I have it on pretty good authority from an Italian that the Italians do this with kittens too - in order to catch some kind of fish delicacy. It's illegal but the authorities tend to turn a blind eye.
No, I wasn't happy about it either.

This isn't French Culture, it's Reunion Island culture. Just like another poster said, French Culture is about as related to Reunion Island Culture as American Culture is to Guam Culture.

Yeah. THe problem is that the French government doesn't care to do anything about it.
Just like Iraq and the way they treated that situation: They were benefitting from that relationship and they were happy to leave well enough alone despite the fact that torture was occurring.
In fact, if we all band together and try to force them to do something France will call a moratorium and try to get Germany on their side and will say that the United States and Great Britain is sticking their noses into business that isn't theirs. They'll say, "Leave it alone - it's fine the way it is!"

wow that is brutal.
let's not blame the french, the japs do the same (not exactly the same) in whaling.
as a vegetarian i see all animals in the same light, so a dog or a fish or a worm on that hook are the same to me.

OMG we put worms on a hook and DRAG THEM IN THE WATER AND THEN FISH EAT THEM.
Seriously, Dogs are also animals just like worms no matter how much we want to humanize them. Our culture uses them as pets. Island culture uses them as bait. Every culture is different. I think one thing here may be that the island culture wouldn't be too happy if the French told them how to live.
But you know, the US isn't used to that thinking. Screw letting native cultures continue to be. We need to move in and make them American.

well, it has "whiskers" too. and while kittens are most certainly not its prime diet, it would not surprise me at all that it would eat them - catfish aren't tremendously picky.

You know, it's apparently illegal in THEIR culture, otherwise THEIR law enforcement they wouldn't be trying to track them down.

You notice anyone isn't concerned about the fish that end up with hooks in their mouth.

big deal? they are stray dogs...if they don't meet their end this way, they would just be put to sleep.
but I guess that "more polite" form of death is more soothing for those unwilling to face reality.
I seem to recall that PETA activists in Virginia were taking dogs that were meant to be put to sleep.... and in the name of publicity were taking them for "adoption" when in fact they were being killed as soon as they go them back to the PETA pounds as they couldn't get rid of them.
Maybe they should feed the PETA activists to the sharks in a similar manner?

I thought this was about France?
Obviously a troll thread.
That said, this is a horrible practice that these "Indian Ocean Islanders" use and should have their balls cut off with a rusty knife.
The story may or not be true but that picture is 'for sure' photoshopped.
No blood and dragging a dog like that in the water behind a boat would tear that hook out in a second.
In parts of Asia they eat cats and dogs so it does not surpise me.

Hmmm... I'd hide your dog if I were you. And yourself as well; the French may not discriminate the animal and its unavoidable codependant Master...
