Link for those of you not in the know.

Are you?

Are you one of the millions that purportedly aren't going to show up to work tomorrow in protest of immigration laws regarding illegal entry into the United States?

The mayor of Los Angeles, hispanic, isn't participating and I'm wondering just how far this supposed boycott is going to go.

Wonder if I should skip having Mexican food tomorrow at my favorite local Mexican restaurant?

I'm still confused why legal immigrants are taking a day off work and risking their jobs to support people who break the law.

"illegal entry into the United States" says it all. I say they should be considered an enemy invasion force and shot on sight.

Why? He's got a valid point: It's going to be a huge bluff and everyone will work. Like the mayor Los Angeles, mayor of the one of the largest Latino communities in the United States (if not THE largest).

The truth is that they picked Monday because that's a good day to not show up anyway.

I demand that all non-Mexicans take a day off on May 2nd, and show them, how this country relies on them. Seriously. Or even better, take Cinco del Mayo off. Boyakasha.

Yeah, I'm all for Day Without A Whitey. For our company, I think we may make it on a Thursday, which is payday, and see how our Mexican employees like it.

We were thinking the same thing...only not in those words.

We were thinking that maybe we should just not show up on Friday which is our payday.

Since it's actually May Day tomorrow (umm... ...today) and is traditionally a celebration for anti-capitalist pagan commie asshats, I'll be working my fingers to the bone. Even though I'm retired. Dammit, I'll go dig the road up before I laze about like a commie on May Day.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.

White people don't work hard for 14 hours at $15/hour. Sorry, but America needs the labor force provided by these people.

I wish more people understood basic economics before entering into a debate about illegal immigration in the US and globalization of the world's work force. It would make the conversation so much shorter.

I will be proudly going to school tomorrow. Perhaps we should have a "Day without the whites, Asians and Blacks," too, and see just how important they are? For some reason I think that would have a bigger effect...

Not true - there are plenty who would work for that wage. It's the $7/hr jobs that are the problrm.

Not for manual labor, without any health insurance, and not for 14 hours. You don't get white people that do that, it's nearly impossible; and when you do get the occasional white person to do it, they don't work nearly 1/2 as hard as the others.

They do. And so does everyone else -- who form the vast majority of the people that run those businesses.

I think the entire immigration debate is a waste of time. We need immigrant labor, and as such, the law should be made more liberal to allow that. At the same time, however, our laws must be enforced, so they need to be strengthened as well.

The entire "boycott" business pisses me off because 1. I know what, for many people, it REALLY means. It means "let's show the U.S. just how powerful Mexico is. Viva la Mexico!" I live in southern California, and get that sentiment from a lot of people. 2. because it is, to some extent, a threat to the U.S. economy rather than a statement. The threat is, "if you don't give us what we want, we will shut down the country." Don't believe me? Many of the protestors have said as much.

I fully support immigration and I support relaxing the immigration laws to allow more people in. At the same time, however, allowing people to violate our laws is unnaceptable and must stop. Making threats and showing nationalism for another country is NOT representative of being a proud American and wanting to be a member of it.

As for boycotting on Monday..... well, i boycott Mondays in general.... (it, being a school day and all...)

But in all seriousness, for me, the way i see it, i -am- for immigration....... but.... as for illegals trying to sneak across the boarder and 'cutting in line' so to speak, ahead of those who HAVE waited their turn.... (people willing to go through the entire process of paperwork, background checks, and swearing oaths and stuff) i say that's just not fair.

As for the whole stealing of jobs thing...... well.... right now, i think the only people who get hurt from it are the 14 to early 20-year olds who are looking for those minimum wage jobs..... something to put on their resume and get much needed experience. But then again, there's always volunteer work and other ways to keep busy......(not talking about and resorting to anything illegal, mind you....lol)

But after a while of thinking... i really think that the better solution would be to try and get the people of those countries to revolt against their governments and push for reform..... if things are as bad to them as they truely/allegedly are. (be it wage disputes, human rights....or what have you)

I'll re-itterate my position on this and maybe simplify it.......... America is more like a full or croweded restaunt...... wait your turn if you want 'in'.... it's not fair if you force your way through and try to cut in front of others who're waiting in line. If you can't wait, go elsewhere.

Or, maybe we could look at it like the tech./dot-com bubble....... market saturation of tech. stuff....... America, saturated with immigrants.... but the system is just not designed to accomodate such a -RAPID- inflow of new 'potential' citizens. (lack of planning on our part). America will be so croweded........-then- what?

I wonder if my son's Spanish teacher is going to take the day off.

Oh, and no, I don't think a lot of us are taking this seriously. It's stupid.

Besides, down here in Florida it's not the Mexicans that fill the lower wage jobs...

It's the Guatemalans and they aren't taking the day off - I asked.

(They work for my husband's company - he fired the Mexicans and hired the Guatemalans and THEY have a real work ethic and are nice quiet little hard-working people that we respect.)

Huh, I'll have to tell that to the 37% of our working force out in the plant that are white. I'll also tell this to the 29% that are black.

Glad you know so much.

Yeah, I think she just likes to get a sense of what we feel and tries to get us to engage in debate/critical thinking.

It does seem a little strange that she takes an anti-immigrant stance and than says that her husband gets cheap labor from Guatemalans (several of which I'm assuming are in questionable legal status).

You'd be right about hamburgers, anyway. Same with frankfurters/hot dogs. They are named after cities called Frankfurt and Hamburg, but not the ones in Europe: the US has a long tradition of naming its cities after cities elsewhere, and hamburgers and frankfurters are named after two such cities. IIRC, the "Hamburg" in "hamburger" is in New York. A few years ago, PETA tried to get them to change their name to Veggieburg. The town was, shall we say, not amused.

Truth be told, I DO like the Guatemalan indians here in Florida.

In the place where I live there is a huge push to drive them away because the nice white tidy caucasian town thinks that they should live elsewhere. (True.)

Personally, I would rather live next to a Guatemalan family than a few of my neighbors and that IS true.

Mexico is by far our biggest source of criminal importation.

They may not be taking high-tech jobs from us, but they are stealing from us, selling drugs, terrorizing our neighborhoods, etc.

Mexicans entering the US illegally ARE criminals. If they are willing to break our immigration laws, what other criminal acts are they willing to commit?

Cody, I took to heart you saying that you are confused, and have been thinking about you for a good part of this morning...

You've mentioned several times that you are hard working, that you make a six digit salary, that you are middle class, etc. You've done so enough that I suspect that being accused of being a rich, exploitive, lazy fat cat would offend you? You seem somewhat sensitive about this...

Are you struggling with the notion of what success really is? I've been to, to a certain extent. I just came from a memorial service for an awesome teacher that was loved by all his students, and affected several of them. He was teaching 9 days before he died of cancer, and was so passionate about teaching that he told his kids that you'd have to drag me from my classroom by the heels. Sure enough, he held true to his word.

For some people, being able to affect others in a positive way is success. For others, being passionate about your work to this extent is success (if it happens to result in making a lot of money, this is a nice perk, but not a prerequisite). To others, the ability to have deep and meaningful relationships with family and/or friends is success. For others, where you live and how much money you make is a metric.

It sounds like you are finding that the cold hard Republican bottom line is somewhat incompatible with some of these other metrics of success? Just a theory, since it is so hard for me to get a sense of what your viewpoints really are. They seem a little inconsistent and, at times, at odds with one another.

I personally like the warm and compassionate Cody the best

There are some doing that. There are some legal immigrants and natives doing that too. I don't know what the numbers are, but your rants sound like the usual sorts of xenophobic crap bordering on racism.

At the end of the day, it comes down to individuals who lack the opportunities that many of us have. Is what they do criminal? Maybe... Is it understandable? Perhaps... Just like Americans, amassing some wealth is attractive. For others, simply feeding your family is likewise attractive. Would you get up in somebody's face for breaking the law if you knew that it was the only way they felt they could feed their families?

I know you could unravel the emotional/humanistic card I've just thrown at you, I could unravel it myself. The point is, not everything is this simple and absolute.

Nothing offends me more than stupid broad sweeping generalizations and absolutist statements.

Comon people, think a little.
