Dunno if this has been done before, but I give it a try.

Always looking for new and beautyful wallpapers for my desktop.

So, please, post your favourite online (free) wallpaper sites.

I can start with my definitive favourite:

Thank for all the replies, hoping more people will post their favourites. My intentions for this thread is to have a place with only top-quality stuff, and after growing tired of searching on google, I feel that a thread with only the best could be a good way to find new sites. So please, keep more stuff coming in, and remember, only the best ones should deserve a place here

Another one, at least it has some quantity, but not everything is that great with regards to quality: www.macdesktops.com

As you can tell, I like girls and manga on my desktop usually, but whatever DP I have, it must be high-res and high quailty. Most of my PeeCee owning friends have terrible taste in "Wallpaper". Usually garish, low-res, badly drawn/scanned/captured images from cartoons like Futurama. I know a lot of PC owners that use images as small as 320 x 200 pixels, stretched out across the screen! Apparently they can't see what's wrong with that. Tasteless freaks.

We seem to have about the same taste. I also can't stand PeeCee users' desktops most of the time.

I work in a store that repairs and upgrades PeeCees. I have been there a little over 2 years, and have seen over a thousand PeeCees come in for repair. I have not once seen a desktop that I would even consider tolerable. Most Windows 98/ME/2000 users use the default "dirty blue" flat colour, and most XP users use the stock "Bliss" picture. The ones that do have enough imagination to change it to something more interesting use images far too small/low-res for their set resolution and seem to pick the worst, most tasteless pictures anyway.

In their defense, I suppose you can never see much of the desktop anyway, because of the countless small, shitty, jagged little icons strewn across the screen. And all that isn't visible for long before the stinking thing blue screens!

The last time I took my iBook in to work, my colleagues (all Windows zealots), gasped in awe at it. They couldn't keep their grubby hands off it. It was pretty much set up as it is now - NEOS installed, Marine Aquarium 2 running as my desktop via Backlight 2, no icons on screen, all menu extras modified to match the sky blue of NEOS, Finder set up to look really cool (no mean feat with Panther - still love it though) and a few custom Konfabulator Widgets to finish off. I think it's about time I posted another Snapshot over at Resex.

Excellent! I've heard of that site but never checked it out. The snapshot page is the only reason I visit ResExcellence really.

Can I ask a REALLY dumb question, though? How do you go about posting an image on a forum like this? I assume you need a host for your image that you can link to. In which case, how do you do that? I don't have a site of my own, although I have a pretty much premium account with my ISP, so I know I have lots of Web space if I want it. The fact of the matter is, I have never been even remotely interested in having my own website, didn't get taught anything about the internet at all at school, or at college, and consequently know absolutely nothing about how to go about such a thing. Nothing at all.

I know there are sites where you can get an account, and then upload images for storage, for this kind of purpose. Do you know which ones are best? I briefly looked into it, but most of them have a charge for permanent storage. One that I found is free, but deletes files after a month.

And what is all this Avatar stuff about? Is this the same thing? Why are they called Avatars? And why is everyone at SpyMac obsessed with them?

Sorry to ask so many dumb questions, but I genuinely do not know this stuff!

Can anyone help?

Once you have found a place to host your screenshots (macsnaps, i.e) you can come here and make a post in the screenshots thread. To show images in the post you need to use VB code.

Example --> [*img]http://whereyourpicis.com/ozzpot.jpg[/img*]

The [img*] must come first and [/img*] must come last. Enter the URL of the image inbetween. It is best to use a small image to include in the post and then include a link to the fullsize picture. The code for a link is [*url]http://ozzpots.com/ozzfull.jpg[/url*]

"don't use the asteriks when you post"

Avatars are the small 80 x80 pixels images that show up under the users name on some bulletin boards. MacNN has them disabled for speed.

Thanks a lot guys!

I've just worked out how to use the space my ISP gives me for storage, and I've uploaded a snapshot to test (in jpeg format). I made a link to it in a reply, as a hyperlink, but when I previewed the post, it didn't seem to work as a hyperlink. It just showed the HTML. I didn't submit the post.

Any ideas why? Does it not display as it should in the preview?
Also, do sites like MacSnaps mind people linking directly to images they host? I know some sites don't like that.

Thanks again for your help.

I second DeviantArt.com. There are ALOT of normies* that are posted, but every now and then, there is a spectacular gem. Over the past year or two at DeviantArt, I have amassed a collection that is nearly overflowing; I rarely go wallpaper hunting anymore.

This last post was nice, at least the first link looks like it contains very much stuff. BTW, could not see the pictures full-size, had to leave an e-mail adress, could you tell me if this is all thats needed to do in order to gain access, or do you have to register and pay something?

Where it asks for your email there is a link just below, click on that which takes you to a larger image then click on that for the full size. I'm not sure how I figured that out the first time. you are right there is a lot of stuff there. Post again if you are having any more problems.

There has to be some more quality wallpaper sites. =)

I don't see how pictures of topless women can be called pornography in the negative sense. Maybe if we were still in the 1950s.

Well, would not call it pornography, but it is still not something I would keep on my desktop permanently, would be some funny situations when Im starting up my book connected to a projector in front of an audience

But keep on posting folks, this thread is getting better and better day by day

If naked girls aren't porno then what is???
If you would get fired for it at work, then it's porno!
Or if you don't have a job, then if I would get fired for it at work!
That's the 'negative sense' about porno, it gets you unemployed!

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

I dont think Ive ever heard of pornography in the positive sense... I know one person who is on these forums at work because he doesnt have internet at his house, Im sure that he would be fired if seen looking at those pictures. That seems pretty negative to me.

Topless girls are porn? Are you guys crazy or what? That would mean we have porn in our ads all the day! No, porn is when the girls and mens are playing with their genitals (and a female breast isnt a genital). So dont be prude and have fun with topless girls, seems like no one has a prob with that except the US guys but they have no prob with brutal videos and guns

Damn, where do you people come from? Iran Are people in the US really that twisted about sexuality that you could get fired for accidentally having a webpage showing some topless women open?

You are aware that they have pics like this in one of Englands largest newspapers (hence the title page3.com). But still, get back to posting, and if anyone wants to have topless women on their desktop let them have it... Personally I find these pictures much less offensive than some of the anime-pics posted earlier, the combination of baby-like faces, little-schoolgirl-outfits and huge cleavage is much more speculative if you ask me, balancing on the edge of flirting with pedophilia...

But still, I cant take anyone with topless women on their desktops quite serious

I've grown up with those sorts of images, Page 3 is nothing these days in the UK, we got a newspaper thats dedicated to showing images like that, no news just topless images of girls basically (for those interested look for Sport newspapers, im not posting links though). Therefore i dont think its offensive in the slightest. You only need to look at advertising around the world to see how attitutes towards "sexually charged images" have changed.
IF showing a brest is Pornography then most fashion shows would be deemed porngraphic and all of them high profile designers would be classed as porn barons.
I'd have though the Americans here would be the most easy with it to be honest what with Freedom of Speech and all that. If someone wants to say about desktops images with Ladies on them then let them, otherwise its going against your own constitutional rights as a citizen. Surely!

Just my 2c!

Well, we Americans are a little mixed up, that's for sure, but Nudie pix are definitely considered porno here, at least in the workplace. The constitution only protects us from oppression by our government, not our employers. They can fire your ass for anything innappropriate which would probably even include Female workers with desktop photos of topless guys if they're suggestive in any way. (of course they can fire you for wasting company time surfing MacNN anyway even if you are just looking at your stock prices so I guess it's surfer beware!)

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

But people, lets get back to posting good wallpapers (and then you may leave a warning if you are posting sites showing some skin ), and lets keep the discussion about the definition of porn to some other forum.

Well, Im sure everyone has their own definiton of pornography, but to me its when women or men are payed to display parts of their body that are sexual in nature. Yes, perbl, if someone saw partially nude women on a company computer or any computer in the workplace for that matter, that person would be fired. How would you feel if you were a woman and had to look at those pictures on your coworkers desktops? I have nothing to say to you Hytest as you dont seem to have a grasp on reality. Thank you tew for helping represent our side of the argument. Since I seemed to have started this, I would like to put an end to it.

Please be a bit more prudent in your choice of pictures to post on a public forum.

i had to register just to respond to these ridiculous comments.

i guess mr tew and holligen get to decide what everyone else likes to see on their desktops.

NAKED GIRLS are NOT porn! Period. let the individual decide for themselves. A description next to the link is all thats needed for to make up your own mind whether or not to click it.

heres a fav of mine - !!WARNING!! just good lookin girls in bikins

Well, these girls were not even naked

Cant we just say that people who are posting wallpapers showing some skin may leave a warning, and then the moderators can eventually decide what is decent or not, but so far I havent seen anything I would call porn in my opinion, as mentioned I see certain anime-pictures a lot more questionable than harmless topless pics from a major newspaper. Then people may decide themselves wether or not they wish to click a link to a "questionable page ).

But nonetheless, thanks for the new link, and welcome to the forum, Onon-Prude American
