What's your summer sport this year? (Or winter if you're in Oz )

I recently discovered a fun sport: trail-running. My dogs got me into it; they love to run in the woods, so I've started running along with them. We have lots of woodland trails here and the pine needles feel nice underfoot. It's good for agility, running over the roots and rocks. I see a number of others out on the trails, too.

What are other MacNNers into this summer? Anyone else like trail-running?

Hiking, or as they say over here randonne. The trails and forest in France are just great. We've got so much forest less than an hour away from the city. I love that feeling of pine needles underfoot as well!

Stateside, I'm hoping to get up to New Hampshire (family) and do some up there around the end of August (escaping the Republicans and their convention).

Otherwise swimming, swimming and more swimming.

Used to do that all the time as a kid. I love the outdoors when it's cool or cold, but I'm pretty lame this summer. Just keeping out of the 100F heat.

Latenight walks in the neighborhood are about all I'm up to physically.

Summer sucks right now. It's cold (16-18C) and rains all day. I'm getting really annoyed because I'm not able to dings outside due to this shitty weather.

I cycle to and from work every day and usually anywhere else I have to go thats within reason. Tuesday and Thursday nights I crew on yacht for evening races, spinnaker and whitesail, respectively.

Gemini--Yeah, I don't like the heat either; I found that running in the rain is great in the summer--instant cooling! My dogs are smart about the heat. Whenever we pass a stream they wade right in.

Paully Dub-I like hiking in NH as well...haven't been there this summer yet, but hope to. Black fly season should be over by now (the miserable critters). The mountains of Franconia Ridge are really beautiful on a clear day. It's quite a workout for the knees coming down from there, though.

Yose--cool that you bike to work. I used to, but haven't found a safe enough route to my current job. Nice to be able to sail every evening, too. It must be great to live that close to the ocean.

I'm not into sports.

i think i'll try surfing when i'm in bali. too bad there aren't any waves, or a beach for that matter, here in the middle of frickin' germany.

Phil, you will love Boston. It's the best. NY is great, but a little too big to grasp in a short time. Get to the observatory on the Empire State building at around nighfall. That's something you will never forget.

CA people are vampires, but if you get to the coast you will have a blast.

My wife ran her first Triathlon a few weeks ago. I think I have the bug. I really want to give it a go in October for the Mission Bay Triathlon.

I do a bit of trail running in the Catoctin Range in MD and in some of the parks around Washington, DC. However, I am always either doing day-hikes or biking on Summer weekends. I spent this past weekend doing day-hikes on the AT in western MD. As long as I am doing something outdoors I am happy.

PS--I used to bike to work but I've got a new job and now I have a 15-minute walk, door-to-door.

Yeah, I feel the same way. Give me a trail or a river and a map and I'm happy.
