Who wakes up in the morning and decides they want to do that to themselves whatever the reason (betting it has something to do with getting closer to God).

Yes, because I've often woken up and thought, "If I put a drill through my tongue, God will love me more."

"Devotees gather at several temples honoring Chinese gods and spirits then undergo a series of purification rituals that, after several days, culminate in a trance.

They roll back their eyes, shake their heads, dance -- whatever it takes to block out the pain -- then pierce their bodies in an ultimate expression of religious devotion."

I would need a lot more than rolling eyes, shaking and dancing to block out pain like that. Morphine probably wouldn't be strong enough...

Considering people are sticking bikes and snakes through the gaps shows that is has evolved from some sort of religious tradition so some stupid attempt at competition and attention.

Hey, if ya got a hole in your face what are you gonna do? Stick things in it obviously. Hole in your tongue? Drill would fit nicely.

I don't see the huge deal here. I see people doing far sillier things for attention all over the place.
-"I don't believe in God. "
"That doesn't matter. He believes in you."

-"I'm not agnostic. Just nonpartisan. Theological Switzerland, that's me."
