I'm kind of concerned about how pared back BF4 will be compared to BF3 and all its expansions (i.e., I'm not worried about tank destroyers or scavenger, but it def should have quads and CTF).

Looks like we'll have some form of naval combat at the outset.

Edit: If this is SP only There Will Be Blood

Called it.

Battlefield 4 Prattle Feed For All The New News | Rock, Paper, Shotgun
The first actual in-game playable moment we see is a dank, grey corridor. It’s like a statement, a declaration of intent. There surely cannot be the collectively lacked perspicacity to fail to understand what message presenting a dank, grey corridor offers us about the game. But I’ll tell you what – what a dank, grey corridor. Water effects on the ground like I’ve never seen before. Wow, look at those particle effects, the cloth physics on those billowing curtains, lighting of the like I didn’t think was possible. Frostbite 3 is delivering on its promises like a postman possessed. And what’s that? “Press E to open.” A game demo on PC.
You’re knocked out, and then you come around all fuzzy, and your friend is looking directly in your face. You know the scene I mean, from the FPS games.
“It’s a new era in entertainment.”

Says the DICE man on the stage, after the video of the same things happening that have happened in every FPS game ever. A sequence of events that could have come from any reveal of any war-based FPS single player campaign in the last two hundred years, not least the Battlefield 3 announcement footage.

“It’s not about the polygons, the shaders. It’s the emotional connection we make with players.”

If emotions include “BANG!” and “CRASH!” then they’ve nailed it.

“The technology has enabled us to become better storytellers.”

If you mean better at telling the same story that gaming has been telling for all of time, then yeah, possibly.

It’s impossible to think anything other than: it’s a multiplayer game! Why aren’t you showing us that? What is this for?
“Social persistence to increase replay value… A single player game true to the Battlefield franchise.”

I don’t know what that means. He didn’t explain. Like he did not about the multiplayer that’s all anyone wanted to hear about. And indeed like the release date, or the platforms it’ll be on. (Edit: Since the event, and impressively 20 minutes after the 11pm PST embargo, EA sent a press release explaining that it’s out this Autumn.) Instead we were shown the same 18 minutes of FPS footage we’ve been dragged through in an inexorable loop for the last twenty years.
The PR industry is ****ed (And by extension, video games).

But seriously, the coming around thing has become a huge joke. I remember having my mind blown in COD4 the first time you came around and got up. Then in MW2 they used the same trick, more than once. By MW3 you were seriously falling down and getting up every other mission. It was parody only they didn't realize it.

So why SP? Because EA wants to be CoD, and because its a little checkmark for when you're looking at the 'value' of the purchase. Co-op has apparently been axed (I'd gladly take a sandbox mode where we can practice using vehicles instead).

Oh yeah, no playable female soldiers. The rumors got it wrong. Reason provided: "Trust me, there are a million things I would like to do," continues Gustavsson, "it's just that you can’t pick them all." Yeah, it's real hard to make those different skins and voices.

In BF3 it says :

Prepare 4 next-gen! BF4 is announced for Xbox One. -- Prepare 4 Battle November 1, 2013! Pre-order BF4 on Xbox 360 to get the China Rising expansion pack.

Yeah I occasionally play BF3 on the weekend with the GAF crew when I get tired of marathon Civ 5 sessions.

This looks like the Commander mission in Blops2 - you have to protect stuff by deploying troops and stuff. You can then actually become one of the troops or one of the machines that you deployed.

Wonder what you can do against Tomahawks.

This is where I feel compelled to point out that Commander was a feature of the old BF games.

Sorry about the no-show, but I was unable to get the dvd tray to open (makes a noise but doesn't open). So yeah, that's what happening with the 4th one... I think it's from atrophy.

Sounds like the belt is loose inside the drive. It's a common problem. Is your Best Buy warranty still good?

So I found a way to pry on the drive door while spamming eject to get the tray to open, I slapped the BF3 disc in there.

Shall we try again tonight? I'll shoot for turning the system on at 9:30.

There's no way my Best Buy protection is still active, if it's a common problem I have no qualms tackling the issue myself, since tearing down an iPhone and replacing the front screen I'm fairly confident I can fix anything.

There'll be another playable beta this time round, if you'd like to get completely turned off again.

Probably both, the only game I plan on actually buying on 360 in the foreseeable future is BF4, the rest I'll get through GameFly.

I think my general plan is to buy no DLC or Premium on XBOX. Hopefully the first DLC doesn't trickle out until next year at which time I should have a PS4 by.

Hey don't blame us. Blame EA and their stupid staged releases. Non-premium PS4 users should get the first DLC by June 2014. I won't have my PS4 until February so I'm hoping to find a Black Friday deal on both platforms.

I'm the same, might buy it in the Xmas sales, if there's a good 25% off.

Got insulted by a colleague because I said that BF4 could be just as fun on a console as on a PC.

Under the guise of what fantastic reasoning? Did he forget player counts on the next gen systems will match?

(BTW, this is one of my criteria for moving to PS4, but from what I understand it's slightly overrated in that most people find 64 players to be a cluster****, so we'll likely be sticking to 32 most of the time)

OH GOD.

I just read that they changed vehicles controls to the sticks (i.e., Halo style). WTF, that is horrible. One of the best things about BF3 was driving made sense.

I always liked the Halo controls for stuff like the Warthog and Flying machines but driving a Scorpion is much more limited compared to an M1 Abrams. I'm sure they'd have some legacy control scheme.

Like all arguments of this type (Ford/GM, Canon/Nikon), I cease discussion when people who have 'not seen the light' start blabbering. Plus he's just a young whippersnapper.

64 does seem high. If the maps are like BF3 then 32 sounds like a good number. Hope my crappy network connection will cope.

Regarding the Beta, unless I've misunderstood something, you have to have bought the game for PC? Maybe I'm not parsing the email that I got correctly.
