Ok, so I have almost everything back up and running post format. The only missing element at this point is my albums in iPhoto. All my photos are there, the folders are there, but the albums within folders are not.
I originally thought maybe they just weren't saved properly, but when I tried to add an album "Montreal" to the "Trips" folder, I get an error saying there's already an album with that name.
any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Make sure you're updated to the latest version of iPhoto. I saw this behavior once when I opened up an iPhoto 5.0.1 library using iPhoto 5.0. As soon as I ran the updater, everything showed back up upon reopening the library.

Good point, I thought I ran software update after installing iPhoto, but now that you mention it, I probably didn't. I'll give it a go later. Thanks!
