I found this board while I was searching for icelandic curses/swearwords. Having no clue of the icelandic language but with some ressources found in the internet, I made up this one: "Hora Hringvöðvi, andskotinn hafi thad!"

Would it be suitable to comment about running into a shelf and hurting oneself?

I don’t think that would be a particularly natural curse to an Icelander... Especially because, according to Google, hringvöðvi does not refer to the same muscle in Icelandic as its English counterpart. I suggest you look at Hugi’s post on page one of this thread—there are a lot of great swear words there.

Well... Let's see...

"Verdammte Scheiße" = "damn sh!t" -- quite a strong expression, although "Schei.." is the most often used one of the swear-words, perhaps several time more often than all other together.

How about a bavarian (german slang) one:

"Himmi-kreuz-donnerwetter-nochamal" = "heaven cross thunderstorm again" -- I know it doesn't make sense in english... or hardly... but, it's a curse nevertheless, used for venting oneself, not for insulting.

According to google? Please tell me, how did you did you that? When I forward hringvöðvi to google, I get lots of icelandic pages, someone even used it in an email address. I found hringvöðvi here: http://www.insultmonger.com/swearing/icelandic.htm. Even if it has no the meaning I wanted, it seems quite near...

Anyway, thanks fo the hint - I plan to use Hugi's expression the very next time I have some use for it, but I have not the slightest idea what it means

I Googled the word, and one of the results was an anatomic glossary, in which hringvöðvi was listed in the head, seemingly a muscle in the eye, if I recall correctly. I couldn’t find any references (in Google or the glossary) of hringvöðvi in the meaning of ring muscle (which, for Glenn [sorry, one n or two?], is the direct translation of hring ‘ring’ + vöðvi ‘muscle’).

“Djöfulsins helvítis andskotans skíta endaþarmsdrulla” isn’t that easy to translate directly (basically due to the Scandinavian tendency to swear in homonymous genitives), but word-for-word it’s:

Djöfulsins = the Devil’s
Helvítis = Hell’s
Andskotans = the Devil’s [the homonymity there]
Skíta = the adjective corresponding to the noun skítur ‘sh*t’
Endaþarmsdrulla = lit. ‘rectal diarrhoea’. Endaþarm = rectum (enda = end, þarm = intestine, drulla = diarrhoea)

So, all in all, “Devil’s Hell’s Satan’s sh*tty *sshole-sh*t” or something to that effect.

‘ll’ is a unvoiced, harshly aspirated l in Welsh, i.e., a normal l where you don’t move your vocal chords and ‘hiss’ or ‘whisper’ a bit more. In Gaelic (both Irish and Scottish, as far as I’m aware), a double l is pronounced the same as a single l. You might possibly be thinking about Icelandic, though, where it’s pronounced as [dl] or [tl].

It's two 'n's, thanks. There are two basic "ring muscle" structures in the face, the orbicularis oculi muscles around the eye (think "squint") and the orbicularis oris around the mouth (think "pucker"). That's about all the "ring muscles" I can think of in the head. (Of course there's a notable one at the other end of the digestive system, but that's another story...)
