I'd like to install OS X on my 5 GB iPod. Obviously space is at a premium. I'm curious, what is the minimal install size of OS X that I could install on it?

Can I simply copy my current OS X System folder on my Powerbook over the iPod and boot off it? Or do I need other folders, like the Applications and Library folders?

Thanks in advance.

you cannot boot from an iPod so you could copy the files but nothing would happen. Or so I heard ...

Actually you can boot from the iPod. It's just not supported by Apple. But I'm not sure what the minimum requirement is for disk space.

The Apple site says 3 GBs are necessary but I'm not sure what you end up with as a final install...

Around 3 GB w/ all the languages installed, but I've heard you can slim it to around 1.9 GB w/ only English.

I'm booted off my iPod right now, have been for 4-days straight. I cloned my drive there so I could send my PowerBook into Apple without all my personal files on there, not to mention I'm putting it up for sale when it returns and I want it ready to go whenever I close the deal.

In any event, yes you can boot from an iPod. My wild guesstimate is you could get OS X to about 5GB. The developer tools, printer files, and documentation are good places to start in terms of trimming the fat.

I'm booted off my iPod right now. The why is a long story, but long story short I cloned my PB drive to the iPod. Works great.

Thanks for the tips! I have my Powerbook in the shop right now too, once I get it back I'll give OS X a go on my iPod.
