The latest issue of Macworld has basic instructions on how to upgrade the iMac's internal RAM (the 128 MB chip that supposedly can't be upgraded).

Does anyone have any idea if the same can be done, albeit with more difficulty, in the 12" Powerbook? Because if it can, can you say "cheap upgrade to 1 GB RAM with two 512 MB chips?"

This probably would void the warranty though, wouldn't it?
The world needs more Canada.
PB 12" 867 MHz, 640 MB RAM, AE, OS 10.4.2

Sure it can be done. Anything can be done. Oh, by the way, how are your surface mount soldering skills?

The iMac upgrade is easy, because all it involves is getting at a "hidden" RAM slot. Once you crack open the half-melon, swapping the included DIMM for something bigger is pretty easy, or certainly no harder than changing the RAM in a G4 tower.

The 128MB of internal RAM in the 12" PB and the iBooks is soldered to the motherboard -- it's permanent, not a removable SO-DIMM. While someone with the right skills could probably swap the chips for higher density ones, that strikes me as a tremendous amount of work for not a lot of gain.
