I've found a ton of information here and elsewhere about how to convert AVIs to Quicktime, or to play AVI movies on a Mac, but I have found NOTHING about converting in the opposite direction. That is, converting a Quicktime .mov file to an .avi file.

I know this can be done with Quicktime Pro, which I do not have. Are there any other ways to accomplish this conversion (hopefully free)?

I'd imagine you can do it with ffmpegX, although I don't know why you'd want to.

It's not for me, it's for a friend. No idea why she wants to do it.

Thanks for the suggestion...

There is the old but still highly functional Movieplayer 2.5 floating around somewhere on the net. If you have the latest Classic version of QT and MP 2.5 installed you get a lot of the features in the current version of QT Pro.
A con is that you will be needing OS 9/Classic to do it, and you might not get all the export options, a pro is that you can then export to Indeo Video, which is a bit less crappy than the current AVI exporters in QT Pro X.
