How f*cking stupid is that ?

So now I have to take the iPad out of the cover all the time to get it charged in the dock ? What a waste of money.

Thanks, Apple, that's a big FAIL.

Yeah. Noticed that, too.
Typical of Apple-branded docks though.

Well, but in this case, they designed both.
Do they really expect that one would take off the cover all the time ?

Cases reduce scratches and, thus, sales.

Wouldn't the case need a big divot carved out of the back?

Well that answers one question I had pre-launch.

To be fair, it's in Jonathan Ive's contract that he gets to kidney punch anyone in the Case Design Team whenever he feels like it.

I think the whole being able to turn it sideways trianglewise was seen as being dockish

Dear spammer,

Telling us that we "should choose some beautiful app ipad case" and then linking to that obviously ill-fitting semi-translucent-enough-to-just-look-like-total-ass rubbery hunk of bright-orange raver-kiddy cumstain suggests a severely disjointed sense of reality.

Please make an appointment with a decent psychologist and let him go to town on your MDMA habit.

Sincerely,

Agreed. I ordered both the Apple Case and Dock (normal, not keyboard) when I preordered my iPad. Received the case and dock yesterday.

Although the case is nice and holds the iPad perfectly, not being able to plce it in the dock when it is in the case is a pain. The case holds the iPad so well that it is not that easy to take it in and out to put it in the dock. I think I will just return the dock. I'd rather use the case and not use the dock than vice versa.

The more I think about it, the more I think that there really is no reason for me to use the dock. If I want to use the iPad as a digital frame, it's better in landscape anyway - which the case allows you to do. Other than digital frame, why else would you need the iPad docked?

The apple case doesn't provide a great angle for long typing sessions, especially when using an external keyboard. I'm going to have to get a dock if I want to do that without being hunched over.

I will be returning my dock, not the case.

We ran into the same problem with iPhone docks too, didn't we? This is why I don't have a dock for my phone-I have (really!) a Griffin cup holder insert on my countertop, which allows the dock cable to stick out with the phone upright, so I can charge the phone where I will see it and not forget it. Of course this doesn't help with an iPad, but I think it highlights how far I went to make do without a dock.

I would think that Apple would be collectively smart enough to make a dock pocket that accommodates skins and covers on their wildly popular products, instead of making us all adapt... Wouldn't they be able to make more money that way? Just sayin'...

Ugh. Sounds ridiculous. And I’ve seen other complaints about the case’s crappiness in general. But while we’re on the subject, does anyone have any recommendations for really good iPad cases/stands?

I don't agree with the main assessment that the case is crapy.

I didn't notice it attracting a lot of dust. Moreover, I tried to use the iPad w/o a cover, and it really sucked. Having no friction against any background makes its use cumbersome. You literally have to hold its full weight in place. If you a lot of reading, a caseless iPad is teh suck.

Isn't the dock pocket acting as a strain relief for the hard-mounted (and angled) dock connector?

Something like that. Having separate pockets with enough room for a cover's iPad (and possibly having one that's got its own padding) would make the entire thing better for the device.

Well, the iPod dock already comes with like 8 different pockets, wouldn't 16 be impractical, and still not fit all the potential cases?

The iPad hasn't fragmented yet, but it's still going to have the same problem. They already sell two types of docks for it... they should sell four different one's at launch?

I don't care how many, as long as it fits my iPad with the Apple cover.

F*ck, it's 2010, we got mobile computers (iPhones and iPad) like we could have only dreamed of 5 years ago, and they still can't make docks that just work ?

Third party vendors can take care of this. No big deal.

If they made it work with the case, how well would it have worked without the case? And what sort of concessions in design would have to be made to take all these possibilities into account?

Pfff, if I had all that figured out, I'd make my own dock.

Alas, I returned mine to the Apple Store today. They were not surprised by my reason for the return.

This could be handled by a doc insert. Easily. While there doesn't seem to be an "official Apple cover" for the iPhone there IS for the iPad. And not making their own products work together is just plain dumb.

Did some careful surgery on the case with scissors. All is well now. Basically the adapter opening had to be extended to the width of the dock with the back about 1/4 inch above the iPad. Not ideal, but functional.

Just trying to determine the use cases of mixing n matching the scenarios:
1. A person has neither
2. A person has the case but no dock
3. A person has no case but has a dock
4. A person has both

1,2,3 = no issues
4 = issues

While i agree, it's a shame that the two accessories cannot live together in harmony. I still cant figure out a better way for them to offer a case and dock that play well together and on their own.

One solution would be to offer a bundle of the two with a customized case/dock that fit together ? but what if you decided not to use the case, would the iPad fit snugly into the dock without the case on ? etc...

Another solution could be a pocket at the back of the case, into which the the tall part of the dock could fit into ?
