Hey dudes!

I'm debating the idea of selling my 1 ghz 17", and buying a 1.5 ghz one

I mostly do documents, websurfing, and a TON of multitasking, at this point, upon my laptop

however, I'll be making a lot more short films, as of late..... so I expect that I'll be using it more often for FCP and DVDSP

any opinions on the speed differences?

I would also likely upgrade the 1.5 ghz to 1.5 or 2 gigs of RAM

It will probably be about 40% faster with the new processor. With the RAM if you do heavy video editing (especially with FCP) you will see a big gain in performance.

Really not woth the upgrade. Wait at least a year before you will see a REAL difference. You would get PERHAPS a 25% gain in speed..at best. When you factor in the cash you're loosing on your sale...it's not woth it.

If I were you I'd upgrade the 'book you have now. Up the HD to a 5400 or 7200, and fill the sucker with RAM. Although the new machines will be faster then your current machine, 1.5GHz isn't going to blow your mind, at least it didn't blow my mind. The only thing that bothers me in the Rev A vs Rev C is the 256 L2 cache and the GPU in your system is a little dated but definetly not worth the upgrade to a new machine.

If you can afford it, I say do it. The 1GHz 17" PowerBooks still fetch a nice chunk of change on eBay. You could probably get almost $2,000 for yours, and then wait for a refurbished 17" 1.5GHz to come in stock at the online Apple Store for around $2,400-2,500.

I think it'd be worth it.

I'll cast my vote for keeping what you have. boost the memory add a faster hard drive.

I'm not sure if you will see any true appreciable speed increases in FCP or dvdsp do to memory and hard drive bottlenecks. Yes things will be faster but not imho gast enough to justify buying a new one. I'd wait one more revision.
