Seems reasonable.

I don't really mind walking through (or in some cases, around) clouds of smoke in designated areas. The libertarian side of me thinks people should be able to smoke as much as they want, so long as they're not affecting others' health.

The problem I have with smokers is them tossing their butts out of the car, making piles upon piles at every intersection. Also: starting fires.

New York City spends $11 million annually on cleaning up cigarette litter.

As an aside about smokers being irritating with their smoke from someone who’s smoked for far too long. For reference, I’ve smoked on planes.

Even then, smoking was considered bad. One of the knock-on effects was there was no way to learn good etiquette. No “smoking mentor” if you will. Everything I’ve learned has been from years of pissing people off.

For example, if I’m on the sidewalk I make sure there isn’t anyone a good 20-30 feet behind me, so they’re not stuck in my smoke cloud just for walking in the same direction.

Embarrassingly, I’ve only been doing this for a few years now.

I do still throw cigarettes out the window, and I have no defense for it, though there was a 10 year stretch where I didn’t smoke in the car.

What?

Cigarette butts on the ground or out the car window is stupid and avoidable. I have known smokers who carry a little tin for putting them in until they can get to a trash can. If you smoke and don't want to keep the butts in your car then why do you think anyone else wants them?

While in a car, there is the ash tray. Beside the lighter.

On old cars, there was sometimes an ash tray in every door. Today there may be one in the dash in vehicles intended for passenger transport. Like vans. Apparently smokers in rear seats can suck it.

Hmm... must have been the qualifier “I have no defense for it” which implied I thought it was okay.

If one was provided I’d certainly use it, but that’s become an old school frill.

Not that this makes failing to find an alternative acceptable.

I often see people using the gutter as a trashcan for their cigarette butts among other pieces of trash. Hate, hate, hate.

This isn’t really a question of me being unaware of solutions, it’s more like sometimes I’m an asshole.

I have my reasons. Not claiming they’re good reasons.

I do in fact reconsider and alter my behavior at times.

Did butt litter happen less often when ashtrays were featured more prominently in cars?

And yes, I did smirk as I typed "butt litter."

I had to look up that "popovers" are generous muffins. The only thing that came to mind was an ad window. You know, the one that appears in front, with THE BIG NEW SALE on cow fertilizer.

I like the sound of Euclid’s Generous Muffins, but that forces it into nerdcore.

ads: popups or popunders

food: popovers are more of a puffy pastry thing than a muffin. you can slather butter and jam on them. The pond house to which Andreg and I are referring:

Is it still that high in the US? In Europe, pretty much the only places that still have 0.08% are England, Wales and NI.

In Germany, it's been at 0.05 since 2001, and 0.03 if you **** up.

IOW, get stopped by cops and the breathalyzer says 0.049%, and you're fine.

Cause an accident at 0.031%, you hand over your license for a certain time.

0.02% in Sweden since the late eighties. 0.05% is by far the most common across Europe, though.

I looked up 'keming' and it said he was a Chinese missile engineer.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Heh. I'm kind of wondering if he (or his attorney) didn't get the brilliant idea from a Doc Martin episode that his PBS station recently aired? My PBS station aired just such an episode in the past couple of weeks.

In case you are worried about Brexit, there's no need to worry further. The most important issue is covered.
One of the UK’s biggest suppliers of toilet and kitchen roll has been stockpiling about 3.5m rolls in UK warehouses in preparation for a no-deal Brexit.

The German firm Wepa said it had been storing an extra 600 tonnes of toilet and kitchen roll in the last three to four months to safeguard supplies in Britain ...
The toilet paper will not run out. As no one has Monty Ward catalogs any more, and print newspapers are uncommon, this could have gone really badly.
