Facebook is shuttering one of its apps, just seven months after the social network launched it on iOS. Users of
Facebook Notify, an app that provides notifications of news headlines from various sources on specific topics, are being informed the app is no longer supported, but that aspects will continue to live on in the future as Facebook is "transitioning parts" into other apps and services operated by the tech giant.
A statement received from Facebook by
TechCrunch confirms the closure, advising "Starting on Wednesday, we will begin integrating Notify functionality into other Facebook products, like Messenger, and will be removing Notify from the App Store." The team claims to have "learned a lot about how to make notifications as timely and relevant as possible," and that there is "a great opportunity for publishers to reach even more people interested in real-time updates from their favorite sources" via apps like Messenger.
While Messenger has over 900 million users per month, Notify seemingly failed to take off. One analytics firm told the report the app may have achieved only 63,000 downloads in the United States during its short seven-month life.
