I have also set up an account so I can also say THANK YOU to btheb and let everyone know that my call to Apple Support went almost exactly as he said it would. I am so excited to say that I will also have my DHL package within two days to send in my iPod and then within a week I will have my new iPod.
They didn't say if I would receive a new 30G or if I will get a 120G...I don't care, I am so pleased that Apple is stepping up and truly standing behind their product.

Thanks again btheb for the post!!!

Yes, first off thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread, you guys are awesome.

I had this happen to my 30gb video ipod classic, and just finished with customer support and they are sending out the box for replacement.

For those considering going to the store to avoid having to wait for shipping, DONT BOTHER. Maybe your luck will be different depending on who you talk to or where you go, but they told me they aren't able to provide a replacement after the warranty expires, REGARDLESS if it falls under the Warranty Exception policy. They just don't have the same power as headquarters I suppose.

Also, if pressing on the bottom right hand corner isn't doing it for you, try in the middle, above the Menu button, thats where the "hotspot" (used to produce any type of sound, and disprove their initial jack problem diagnosis) was for me.

THANKS!

I have also set up an account so I can also say THANK YOU to btheb and let everyone know that my call to Apple Support went almost exactly as he said it would. Actually, it went alot smoother than I thought. I was pumping myself up for a fight and there was absolutely no argument. As soon as I told the Customer Service Rep it was a Manufacture defect he said yes let me transfer you to a Product Specialist and that was that. The Product Specialist took all my info and the DHL box is on it's way for me to send my iPod in for a replacement. I didn't even buy this iPod - I won it in a radio contest 3 years ago!

I had settled for the fact that it was probably broken and I wasn't going to pay the $190.00 to get it fixed. Then I decided to Google the problem to see if it was something I could fix myself. I LOVE the internet!

Thanks again btheb for the post!!!

Made account as well just to say thanks. Called apple, had to battle through 3 CSRs for some reason until the escalated me to David the product spec, he was familiar with the issue, no fighting no nothing just got my info and they gonna send me a box =) He even recommended in the meantime that i put it in the freezer which i thought was crazy... Anyways, how long does the whole process take from when i send the box back til i get my fixed/replaced (Hopefully) pod back?

I just wanted to say thank you to all for the great info on resolving this issue since the sound on my Ipod stopped working last week. Huge bummer since I use it for all my music now. I was able to get thru to a Product Specialist and received the return box within 24 hours. It came by Fedex and it was a next day shipment. I wasn't able to catch the Fedex guy in time to take the ipod back so I had to call for a pickup the next day. The package had to go all the way from NH to Elk Grove CA to be evaluated. They send you a link to the Apple website so you can see the progress of the return, pretty slick. My unit arrived on Monday, was evaluated and a replacement sent out late yesterday. I should have it today according to Fedex's website. All in all, I have to say apple is on the ball. Has to be one of the fastest turn arounds I've seen. Hope the Ipod works since I don't know if its a new one or a refurb. I'll post the outcome as soon as I receive the package. Thanks again for the great info

I just signed up to say this works as well. I didn't even have to go through a lot. I followed the same pattern, talking about holding the bottom right corner. They told about it being out of warranty and paying $129, but they said they'd waive it for this problem. Score!

I'm so thankful for this post!! I just got off the phone with Apple support and have a replacement on the way.

On my first call with support they sent me to an Apple store. DO NOT let them waste your time. The store has no authority to deal with this issue and in fact were quite rude and led me to believe that the problem would not be resolved. I followed up with a second call to support and after some persistence finally was transferred to the "next level of support". They promptly recognized the issue and let me know that this issue was being recognized as a warranty exception. They are sending me a box to ship back my current ipod and stated they would be sending me a replacement. I don't know what kind or any of those details, so we'll see..

For eveyone who is having this issue and the freezer fixes it (temporarly) I beleive I have found the culprit and re-soldered it. For anyone comfortable taking it apart and fixing it here is a picture of what I did. the red arrow points to where I put the soldering iron. the little white dot is the exposed board under epoxy (just touch the iron to it and it goes right through the epoxy) The blue arrow is where I pressed down with tweezers while heating it with the iron. The chip with the blue arrow is what I beleive to be the culprit. Anyone comfortable give it a try and let me know if it worked for you. I did it with the ipod playing so I could tell when I got it.

Hope this helps!

Chris

I called Apple today and also will get a replacement for free. I only used about 15 minutes to finish the whole thing. All you need to do is follow the instruction by btheb and when you are transfered to a Product Specialist, you will be taken care of. Thank you very much, Btheb.

This is no joke! I got transfered to a customer service rep the first time I called and they said that all they could offer me was a $60 coupon for a new ipod. I was kinda pissed so I tried calling again. This time I asked specifically for a PRODUCT SPECIALIST. They did not transfer me directly to a specialist so I politely asked again. When I finaly got to the specialist, I told him about only having sound when putting pressure on the lower right of the ipod. He put me on hold for like a minute or two then came back on the line and said that they would wave any repair cost. They are sending me a box to ship it to the repair shop. I am hoping that they just scrap it and send me a new one or maybe a refurb. This is awsome as my ipod crapped out on me 6 months after I bought it. I think I might be finding new faith in apple!

I created an account just so I can post my thank you.

I followed the steps and called the customer service. I was on hold for like 30 minutes -_- and then some Indian representative who barely spoke English came on. I was sooo sweet and polite and very slowly explained to him that I have no warranty but it is a manufacturer's malfunction and would like to speak to PRODUCT SPECIALIST. I repeated the same sentence three times. I was then put on hold and after 15 minutes a product specialist picked up the phone.

I gave him my info and I lol'ed inside when he repeated my information and followed it with a "you do know your warranty expired 700something days ago?" haha! Regardless, I did tell him about the sound and that the sound comes out when I press down on the right corner. Actually the latter I was BS'ing as I tried to squeeze the right size but the sound still wouldn't come out. But I kept upwith my BS for 10-15 mins and he told me he'll send me a new iPod but with same specs - model and size. I didn't really care because my old iPod was scratched up and ugly anyway oh he also requested mine to be sent via DHL which he would take care of as far as packaging and what not.

He sais the reason Apple is replacing our iPods is bc they still don't know what causes it. Oddly, I was smartass enough to ask him why he would send me the same model iPod if that model broke. And I lol'ed when he answered "it's been tested for the defect" when they don't even know the cause of it. Oh Apple...

Anyway after I hung up, I started to press around my screen and finally found the spot everyone talks about. It's not a right hand corner as I literally took it. It's the right hand corner of the wheel - right below it. It's cool that my BS came to be the truth so I'm stoked about my shiny new iPod. I hope they do upgrade me though ^__________^ that would be so dandy!

Well, I shipped it Friday and received the new iPod today (Monday). It's marked as overnight so I imagine they sent it out right away. Unfortunately, it's still 30 gb I didn't get the free upgrade! But considering it's been out of warranty for over 2 years, it's cool they still stood behind their products.

Take your iPods out of the freezer...Apple has finally acknowledged this problem and are doing something about it!

After my first call to Apple almost a month ago, I was quite mad with Apple and their Customer Service Reps and resorted to dusting off my battery-eating CD/mp3 player. Today I finally decided to brave the hold music and try again, and actually got somewhere - I should be receiving an e-mail from a Product Specialist tomorrow with details on my replacement iPod.

As many people have seem to have reached dead ends after calling Customer Support (myself included!) I thought I would share the plan of attack that worked for me:

1. Call the Customer Support for iPod number: 1-800-275-2273. I just kept hitting 0 so I didn't have to listen to the automated iPod diagnosing junk.

2. Tell the first person you speak with that your iPod no longer has any sound. Explain that when you apply pressure to the lower right hand corner of the iPod the sound will return, but when pressure is released it goes away again. Tell them it is a manufacturing defect and that you would like to speak with a Representative who can refer your case to a Product Specialist. (If they tell you your product is no longer under warranty, let them know it does not matter in this case, and to please go ahead and transfer you).

3. The Customer Care Representative. Tell them everything you told the first person. MAKE SURE YOU TELL THEM ABOUT THE PRESSURE ON THE CORNER ISSUE! This is apparently key to them understanding/diagnosing the problem. If they say they have never heard of it being an issue, tell them it was only recently (within the past month or so) noted by Apple, and that the Product Specialist/Engineers should know exactly what the deal is.

4. At this point, they should be telling you that they see it is in fact a problem, and that there is something that can be done! If they are still giving you the run-around, let them know it has definitely been noted by Apple and that you would like the matter to be handled properly! If you need to, ask them to refer you someone else, and to refer you to the Product Specialist regardless of whether or not they are informed on the issue.

5. Hopefully by now you should have been either referred to the Product Specialists, or the Representative will have talked to them for you. The woman I spoke with just put me on hold for a few minutes while talking to them, and returned to tell me that I didn't even have to speak with them myself, and to just give her my address and E-Mail. She said someone would be contacting me shortly and that I should receive a new iPod within a week or so. She apologized for my treatment before and was very polite and helpful.

In all, I was on the phone for a little over 30 minutes, and most of it was holding before reaching the Customer Service Rep. Compared to the almost 1 1/2 hours before with no results, it was like night and day. Hopefully this can help some of you guys out, even if you've called before. The Rep even deleted my previous "case" and gave me a new one. Just be straight to the point and tell them exactly what the problem is, and what needs to be done. Good luck!!

Windows XP
Just wanted to say thanks for the info on calling Apple. I just hung up from them and they are sending the repair box to me. They said they are going to repair my Ipod- not replace like other people. She said it is a component on the motherboard that has come loose so they will fix it for me. It could take 7-10 days but that is better than what they could do at the Apple store-nothing! Just a 10% discount on a new IPod. If they wind up sending me a new Ipod I will let you know. Thanks again!

I've been researching my iPod's recent little temper tantrum, and it has all the symptoms that this thread is talking about. Power is on, shows it is playing but no audio coming out of the data/dock port on the bottom or out of the headphone jack. When it first happened, it seemed that when it got colder out (winter in South Dakota is a lot like a freezer) it would work again. It has pretty much completely quit and the squeezing trick that everyone talks about does not work to make the sound come back. I just don't want to push the issue with Apple, get them to get me a refurbished one and then have them receive it, see it is a different problem and then charge me. Any advice would be splendid.

btheb Rocks!!
My 30gb apple is in pristine condition... I rarely use it... and there are zero scratches on it.
When the sound went out I was totally miffed as I spent good money on this "Apple" product.
As an IT Director I went online and did some searching and ran across this thread. (Thank God!!)
As I'm going on vacation to Hawaii in a few months and I want to have my Ipod (or I'll have to buy another product) for the trip. I closely followed the instructions set forth by btheb...

I contacted apple at 1-800-275-2273 and the first person let me know that my warranty was expired.
The first person I talked to asked me for my serial and let me know it was out of warranty.
I told her that my ipod has no sound and that there is a known issue where on the 30gb ipods that if you press at the bottom right the sound comes on but cuts out when you let go... and that despite the warranty being expired Apple was helping owners out as it is a manufacturing defect.
She sent me to a tech support person (despite asking for a "Product Specialist".
I went back and forth with the first Tech support contact I talked with and I pleaded my case.
I also have 5 Ipods of various flavors in my house (I'm the father of 4)... she did patch me through to a higher power who helped me out.
When I talked to the Product Specialist he said that it is a known issue and that he would help me this time on the problem... despite it being out of warranty as it is a mfg. defect.
He gave me a case number and they are going to send me box to ship back my Ipod ... and then when they get it they will send me a working iPod.

Thanks so much... to btheb and also to Apple for going the distance.
I'm a PC guy ... but I'm very happy with this support and when my workstation needs replacement I will be looking at Apple!

I had to talk to two Apple Product Specialists, but they are finally sending a new IPOD video free of charge. I had a 30G IPOD video with no sound, but they are replacing it with a 120G Video. Thanks to btheb who posted the instructions on Aug 25, 2008, 03:44 PM.

Registered here to say it worked great for me! Initially, the person I was talking to wouldn't budge since my ipod was 400+ days out of warranty. However, he was happy to oblige with connecting me to a product specialist. The product specialist was immediately able to recognize the problem that we've all had and sent a fedex box for me to send my ipod in, which he said will be replaced with another ipod of the same make (30 gb, 5th gen). I just sent off my ipod today, so I'm super excited! Thanks again to btheb.

Did the same, wanted to say a big thank you. Had to talk my way through 2 customer service people before I got to a product specialist. He tried to talk around it but I kept pushing it and he put me on hold and came back to tell me that he was waving the out of warranty fee. I should get my box tomorrow and I will send the "no sound Ipod" back. Just keep asking to talk to a Product Specialist and don't give up, good luck.

By the way my product specialist's name was Danial Booker @ 1-877-388-0879 ext: 59944 but you didn't hear that from me. LOL

So I have been trying to figure my problem out for about 4 months now. Stumbled onto this post, called and they are sending a box out to me. I just hope they don't give me crap about opening it, they said they wouldn't fix it the first time I tried so i thought i had no chance

Doubt they will tho, BUT When I called I talked to someone very nice. I told him my prob and said it was a common ipod defect from the 5th gens and he did a search on his computer, found my topic, and directly sent me to a specialist The specialist took my name, address, blah, blah, and said i will get a box tomorrow! I didn't have to convince or push on anyone, very odd

Hope I get a new one, who wouldn't? I will be very please just to get mine working again! Does anyone know if they fix or just send replacements?

Thanks again for great post!

Cheers

This definitely works. Just follow the instructions and be nice and polite. They are fixing/replacing my Ipod which I bought in 2005. They'll even send you one engraved if you want. Just make sure to ask for the product specialist. The whole process took me about 10 min.

thanks to btheb and his instructions, my ipod will be sent for repair with no cost! Although I wished they would have just sent a replacement, but it beats having a useless iPod laying around. Thanks again buddy. Anyone with this issue, i suggest you follow his instructions or just ask to speak with a Product specialist! There is still hope for your iPod. Most likely they will send you a box so you can send your iPod in there, like me.

This forum rocks, and I also had to register just to post this. Thank you guys so much for paving the way.

I just encountered the same problem today with my iPod Video (5G) that is presently nine months past warranty. I could still hear the clicker just fine with or without headphones but could only get the actual audio output by compressing the lower right corner. I called Apple and followed btheb's instructions exactly, using key words "product specialist", "warranty exception", etc. I was forwarded directly to a product specialist from the first customer service rep. I explained the problem exactly as I encountered it and even included the gory details that I had researched the issue online and found it to be a known one. The PS gave me his direct contact info, called me back in 15' as promised, and they are sending a box for me to return the iPod for repair. Many thanks again for the help!

Now if we can just get Apple not just to design but also to assemble their technotrash in California (or anywhere else in a developed country) rather than going for the cost effective Chinese slavery, we'd be making serious progress. And while I'm on fire, don't forget to bring all your technotrash (with all its valuable/toxic metals) to the right place once it actually becomes trash, rather than just punching it off in the landfill to poison your grandkids. Pfaaaahhhh!

That's right: Learn how fun Apple can't be here. And find out about where to bring your overpriviliged electronic waste right here.

Peace and health,
Friar

I like many others created an account simply to say THANK YOU btheb! I called Apple.... hit 000000 to exit the automated junk.

1st Customer Service Rep... Told him the issue, told him it was a manufacturing problem and that I understood apple was correcting the problem regardless of warranty. (My warranty is more than a yr expired) He asked where I heard that I said on apple's website. (This problem is listed there also) He put me on hold for almost 10minutes, came back and said ok we will send you a box today via fedex. Put your ipod in the box, send it to us and apple will repair or replace the ipod! WOW!!! I am so happy! Thank you btheb and Thank you Apple for finally seeing your error!

I just talked to a product specialist (I have the exact same problem), but he was saying that while they acknowledge the problem he couldn't offer me a warranty exception. I was being polite and also trying to get him to refer me to somebody else who might know what they were talking about (>_>) but he was being kind of a prick about it and said he's the big boss. I really doubt that, but whatever. I'm gonna try calling again tomorrow.

i just registered to say thank you for this. my ipod has had this problem for a few months until i decided to research about it.
the CSR told me that my iPod was 500 something days out of warranty and i would need to pay $129 to get my ipod fixed or to buy a new one . so i asked to speak to a Product Specialist who also tried to get me to do the same thing. I told him about the warranty exception and that its a known manufacturing defect, he put me on hold twice then he finally said he would take care of it for me. i guess being nice over the phone and being persistent helps a bit.

Thanks a lot btheb.

Well I did exactly what the post said and everything went exactly like you said. They tried to tell me it was out of waranty...which I knew this Ipod was over two years old. The person then proceeded to hang up on me when I insisted I speak to a product specialist, so I called back and went through the same thing again. When I finally was able to talk to a PS he ask for the website I found the info on and I pointed him here and also to Apples website and a thread that mentions the same issues with the ipod sound not working. After reading that my telling him that I had been hung up on the first call he was very helpful. I received the box two days after the call and the replacement will be here this Friday. Im really happy to get the ipod back and thankful for the information I recieved on this forum. I have been an Apple advocate for 15 years and have purchased 6 Apple Computers and 7 Ipods I still have the first Ipod they came out with and it still works. Good Luck To All and spread the word Apple does stand behind their products.

Hey guys I have the same problem that many of you had. Called in, got a product specialist to agree to send me a box, but he wasn't so sold on the problem. So after agreeing that Apple would check it out, he also said that any sight of damage would lead them to discard my case entirely. Problem is there's a small dent on the side of my ipod, no where near the bottom right hand corner, which might lead them to dismiss my case without trying it first.

And yes I do indeed have the issue with the bottom right working. I'm just hoping they don't look at the small dent and immediately discard my case. This happen to anyone else?

Just say thanks, I did as "btheb" said, on Sunday morning 8:20 am. Met a nice lady at first, I told her what happen, she asked my serial,I replied and asked transfer to product specialist. take 30 sec. Then, a man pick up, asked me nicely, i told him the problem. Then he put me on hold, talk with specialist, then came back, said there is a fee ( 139 bucks). Problem here, don't let it turn you down, I told him nicely that I did not do anything to the ipod, and this problem is noticed by Apple as manufacture defect, asked him nicely, if he can tell the specialist again, and is there any way can wave the fee, ( Insist with manner voice, the power of conversation. ) He said yes, put me on hold, then a specialist came, he asked me about the ipod, ( classic, fifth gen, 30Gb) >I told him the right hand corner problem, and ipod in condition as I bought ( the case not detach --> they will assume you made damage to the ipod, insist that you not ). Then he accept my case, ask me zip code, email, street name, and said a box will come in 2 days, put ipod in, send back to them, they will investigate, if it just has right hand corner problem, repair is free, but it is damaged, theyy will send back to me with a charge. After that, I will receive it in 6-7 days.
-Key: clearly describe ( problem, model), insist it has been noticed by apple as manufacture defect, and whether the warranty is expired, they will take care the product still. Talk with manner, ask "please" . Don't get mad, be patient, and you will have what you want.
Thanks this forum, hope my case will be solved.

First of all, thank you btheb and everybody who contributed/replied.

Second, when I first encounter this problem it was back in May or July time. I didnt came across this post back then, and the only thing I tried to resolve my ipod problem was to replace the headphone jack piece. Of course, that had no effect what so ever, nor had the vision of freezing it.

I just finished talking to the Apple Product Specialist on Feb 9th approx. 5:00pm. I had to go through a hurdle of my warranty has been expired conversation to talk to another PS issue. The first rep said he never heard of such problem, you just have to kindly insist to pass you onto a PS person. You need to describe the issue to the PS person again, and for me, he said it is a known issue a couple months ago. He is sending me a box to get it fixed, however, if the problem is not that known one, the case is dismissed. Furthermore, if it is being fixed, it will carry a 90 days warranty instead of a year. The only thing that is bothering me is that instead of getting a replacement, they are only fixing it. However, I am grateful that the problem is being addressed not on my expense.

Hope my scenario help someone.

I will update once I got the result of the ipod verdict.

I first have to say that I tried speaking to the "Apple Genius" in the store...who was a complete jerk not to mention he had no idea what he was talking about. After them offering to sell me new ipods at a reduced price because my warranty had run out...i just walked out. Luckily I found this thread. I called the number and told the CSR I wanted to speak w/ the product specialist...he immediately acknowledged the problem and simply asked for my mailing address. I even got put on an e-mail list to track my shipping. I'm getting a free, new ipod all thanks to you awesome guys and girls here and your words of wisdom. The whole process took about 30 min but it was so worth it. I should be getting a box on Tues.

Caulk up another one boys! I too felt I MUST create an account to tell everyone that THIS DOES WORK! Word for word of what has been posted here. After the initial "out of warranty" speech, I asked to be transferred to a product specialist. Without issue, they transferred me. My product specialist, David G, was extremely friendly and IMMEDIATELY acknowledged that this is a known issue with this particular line of iPods. He actually mentioned that he believes it is a bad solder! He took down my name and address and is overnighting me a FedEX box to ship them my iPod. In turn they will send me a new one. I gave him my email address and he immediately emailed me with his email address and told me if I have any problems getting mine replaced, that I should email him and he will ensure I am taken care of. Total time on the phone with Apple including wait times was ~15 minutes.

The funny part, he actually mentioned to me that putting it in the freezer will make it work again for about 15 minutes! LOL!!!

I just bought an ipod 30gb on craigslist but only one headphone worked. So i decided to see if i could fix it my self, but luckily i found this page. I just got of the phone with Apple and the guy was really cool. At first i asked to be directed to a specialist and i got another idiot. I explained to him i read it on apples page and he asked me to give him a second while he looked for it. I was like cool go for it. He came back about 3 minutes later saying i could not find the post you were talking about. I kindly replayed can you transfer me to a specialist, so about 7 minutes on hold i got a guy on the line and did he ever help me. He said ill send you a box and send it back, when you get the box just ship the ipod to us and will send you a new one. So i got of the phone and about 10 minutes later they guy called me back and he explained that he needed additional info and he gave me his extension. So hopefully i get it back quick, oh thanks to btheb for the info without your information i would of been out of 80 bucks i paid for it..lol
new ipod and only paid 80 dollars.
ooh the guys number is1-877-388-0879 ext 50702 but i didn't tell you this..lol

Here is my case. I just got my iPod back today from Apple and it looks brand new. No scratches, dents, nothing. It came with plastic sticky wrapping around it, and it even did the same engraving for me too, which I thought is pretty sweet.

I am charging it now, didnt play songs yet; I assume it would just work.

Thank you all for spreading the information.

Just to update everyone, I have received my new iPod. It is not the same serial number as I sent in, so they did indeed replace it. Not repair it. It looks brand spanking new. Bravo Zulu to Apple for outstanding customer support and ultra fast turn-around time.
