Sony has signed a deal to supply music for Apple's upcoming streaming music service, usually nicknamed iRadio, a source allegedly familiar with the talks says. The agreement should mean that Apple has the three biggest record labels on board, including also Warner and Universal. Still missing is Sony/ATV, a joint venture that handles publishing.
AllThingsD claims however that obstacles to a Sony/ATV deal are smaller than those Sony and Apple were experiencing just a few days ago. In the latter category was a dispute over skipped songs; Sony was asking to be paid for any play of a song, even if a listener decided to skip it.
It's expected that iRadio will be announced at WWDC on June 10th, but only launch sometime later. As in other reports, AllThingsD suggests that the service will operate similarly to Pandora, but with some more advanced controls, if not at the on-demand level of Spotify.

I'd appreciate even basic controls front and center, like volume, balance and bass/treble and a low volume/loudness contour switch in the mini iTunes controller...?

Spotify and Pandora will a serious competitor. Love Pandora for its simplicity. Hate Spotify for complexity (iTunes on steroid with Photoshop interface).

Great, soon every single digital music service will be subscription-based. Then the fears of the anti-DRM crowd will actually be based in reality, and you'll be able to lose your whole music collection for stupid reasons over which you have no control! (Remember what happened with PlaysForSure when Microsoft pulled the plug?)

You can still buy your music without DRM. Apple's solution is similar to FM Radio or Satellite Radio.
