Hey all,
I am having a particularly annoying problem on my Pismo running 10.2.4. When I go to launch almost any application it bounces once in the Dock, then nothing. Apps that worked this morning like Entourage, Mozilla, Toast Titanium are not working now. Other apps, like Safari, work fine.
I have done a repair with Disk Utility but the problem still persists.
I apologize if this has been asked in the past, but I did a search and didn't come up with anything...
Thanks,
Siegzdad

Here goes the general check list:
1. did you install any new software between now and then?
2. connect to any strang sites?
3. download any "strange" files?
4. upgrade the os with any new updates?
5. check for virus?
6. hard reboot your computer / power failure?
7. anybody else use your computer?
8. log in as root?
9. update or change system files / prefs?
10. leave your computer connected to the internet?
11. roll without a firewall?
there's about 15 million other ideas that are currently in brain fart memory space, but that's the top of the list anyway...

I remember the time I tried theming, no apps would launch anymore. But you never mentioned themes.

have you tried opening the apps directly?
try that, and if they open, delete their icons from the dock, and drag the apps back to the dock...

i had the same problems. i gave up on themes for good when i had panic after panic with them installed. i just pictured some monkey sitting behind a keyboard making these themes. all of them were 100% shite.

I installed the latest iMovie patch and the Java update. Also I have installed sunShield v1.02 to use my PowerBook as an airport bridge from my Wireless cable router to my desktop systems, so it has always been behind a firewall. I have tried uninstalling sunShield, but no change.
I have done checks with Disk Utility, Norton Utilities, & NAV but can find nothing wrong.
I never login as root.
I do have have any theme software installed.
Launching apps from the Applications folder produces the same result.
Short of reinstalling all my system and apps, I am not sure what else to do...

You could do an archive and install to retain most of your apps and preferences. Some apps may have to be reinstalled though (those apps that install files into System/Library or /Library instead of the ~/Library directory).
I had a recent problem which required me to do just that.
All's well that ends well.

I'm probably, too late. I would have created a new user and see if they have the same problem. If they don't then it's a preferences issue.
Another option would be to drag your user library onto the desktop log out and log back in. A fresh library will be created and then you can replace it's items from the old library.
As for themeing ruining your OS that's possible because themes replace some core elements in your OS. The safest thing to do is to replace the individual portions of the themes yourself, so you know how to fix any problems.

Thanks for the suggestion Toyin, unfortunately the same thing happened in both cases. :/
I even went as far as logging in as root but still could not run the apps. Thanks for the suggestions everyone, I'm not gonna fight it, just gonna back everything up and reload.

I was getting the same problem after updating to 10.2.4 . All the apps would start to open then just fail to respond. What seemed to fix it was running the 10.2.4 combined updater istead of just the single point update. Everything working fine now.
Its worth a try before reinstalling your OS and apps all over again.
