After finally dealing with a crashed hard disk drive and getting all of the data off of it, I tried to insert a Panther install disc so that I could reformat and reinstall the OS. For some reason, though, after I ejected a disc (by pressing the trackpad button at startup time) the combo drive locked and I cannot even insert a disc into it. This has happened before but I don't remember how it was solved. Also, I've tried resetting the PRAM, the PMU, etc., etc.

EDIT: Now that I've reinstalled the OS via an external CD drive the combo drive is STILL locked and appears to making clicking noises every once in a while. Hmmmmmm.....
