Does anyone have any stories to relate yet about their success/issues with running XP and software using BootCamp?

I really hope this thread will not be locked. We need a discussion of a more technical nature asap--not just a "lounge" type thread.

A few users I know have run into issues with it requiring a SP2 CD. They have SP1 CDs and the SP2 update, but Boot Camp doesn't support slipstreaming the update in. The fix was to slipstream in SP2 with a PC, burn a new CD, then use Boot Camp to burn yet another CD.

Core Solo mini running Quake III on XP Pro SP2

We installed with a slipstream CD.

Apologies for the poor quality on the pics...I don't know how to do screen caps in windows. ;-)

Well I had the original XP hack installed on my iMac, but I am formatting as we speak (just to get rid of the FAT partition and the altered partition table), ready to install BootCamp.

I only have an SP1 disk, but I have slipstreamed SP2 into it on one of my PCs. I have tested this to an extent - well basically seeing if my PC would boot from it, and it does - so here's hoping it will work!

Will report back with the outcome of the install, though it will take a while, i've got to do software update for the OS then the firmware update, then the XP install (and thats all after the '22 minutes' left on my OSX install)

How are the drivers on the Apple CD?

Do they support accelerated video on the iMac or MacBook Pro?

How about support for the iSight?
I'm cookoo for Cocoa Apps!

I haven't tried it yet - because i'm waiting for my install to finish... but Apple says the CD contains drivers for the video card - hence it leads one to believe the video card is fully supported under Windows.

Apple states the iSight, along with the remote and the backlit keyboard on the MBP is unsupported.

Fully nice accelerated on the MacBook Pro, tried the new Condemned demo and it really looks nice

I ran into some keyboard issues, but found workarounds at the onmac.net wiki.

The iSight is not supported, as stated by Apple, in the current Boot Camp beta.

I'm going to be trying it this afternoon, after making a complete backup of my system. The previous method required reformatting your computer and using XP Pro (which I don't have). That and the lack of drivers made me decide to skip it, but Boot Camp supports XP home, doesn't required wiping your hard drive, and includes drivers for things like graphics, so I'm very interested to give it a try. Of course, I've got a Shuttle XPC right next to my iMac, so it's not like I NEED to do this, but I want to see how it works. I'll be back with updates later.

Presume I need to install Norton (or similar) antivirus software if I put Win XP on my MacBook Pro?

Not unless you want to connect it to the Internet at some point.

Should be the same as any other PC with the same ATi video card and drivers (ditto for the Intel network/wifi/audio/chipset hardware and drivers).

No mention of iSight support -
For your convenience, Boot Camp burns a CD with all the Mac-specific drivers for Windows:
* Graphics
* Networking
* Audio
* AirPort wireless
* Bluetooth
* The Eject key (on Apple keyboards)
* Brightness control for built-in displays

Bluetooth? Does that mean you can use a wireless apple keyboard and mouse after the install is done?

It would seem logical that you could, though somewhere on Apples site it says it will not work/is not supported

I think showing this is a great thing... Shows what level of game tech can be played via MacXP. Basically, if it can do QIII, then it can do Halflife2 and the others...

HL2 Demo is VERY choppy.

Changing settings to lower quality freezes game.

This IS a mac mini core solo, however.

Well, there you go

Hopefully some people with iMacs or MBPs come out to report their gaming experiences... For me, this is really the ONLY reason I would want to instal XP on a mac.

Does Boot Camp simply adjust the partition tables so that there is free space which the Windows OS can then format and use?

What happens if you have multiple partitions on a single physical drive?

Looks like it does adjust the partitions, and on the fly I might add.

3 partitions total in the end.

1: The EFI bootloader/BIOS wrapper thing.
2: OSX (HFS+)
3: WinXP (NTFS)

I haven't had any trouble so far with Bootcamp. I don't have any games, but I did install Avid Xpress Pro HD with no trouble.

Sorry, but adding a new thread after a moderator already closed one on the topic is a no-no. And this is clearly NOT a Mac OS X topic, though I will freely admit that I am at a loss as to where Boot Camp discussion properly belongs right now. (Fret not, a proper adjustment to the forums is under discussion already.)
