Yeah, this scientific fact has been stated repeatedly in this thread. Some people just refuse to accept it as fact and characterize it instead as "hype" put forth by those "vilifying" those who declaw their cats.

This I do not buy at all. Cats are not indoor creatures. They love being outside and most of them are pretty good at taking care of themselves. That said if I lived in the middle of a big city I might consider it, but I have had cats in the middle of the city before and they were allowed out, but both were rescued strays so already streetwise. Also I thought there was a vaccine for feline AIDS these days.

Again, absolutely yes.

I'm just relating experience and the suggestion of pretty much every pet organization. You can do whatever you want, I'm just letting you know that, on average, your cat will die within 5 years if you let it go outside. If you keep it indoors, 15 to 20 years. Nothing is for certain, of course. All of my cats were indoor/outdoor when I was a kid. Best of luck, anyway.

I wasn't aware of a vaccine for FIV, so I looked it up. Apparently there was one released in 2002. It's a shame it wasn't a few years earlier. It will protect about 80% of the time, and your pet will test positive for FIV. Make sure that information is on your kitty's file or chip if you get one just incase he/she gets picked up by animal control or local shelter.

All my cats have always been indoor/outdoor cats. I big cities, like London and now Toronto. All of them have lived to a ripe old age. I am aware of the risks, but I do think that cats that are allowed out have a better life, with the risk of it being shorter.

Our cats are vaccinated against feline AIDS, so am not worried about that.

5 years? Total BS. How many cats did you have as a kid that were indoor/outdoor? How many of them lived past 5?

I've had 6 cats in my lifetime, all allowed out, some in cities, the rest in a village but I live by a fairly busy road which they all crossed when they felt like it. One of them lived to be 19 or so, the second was about 9 or 10 but got FIV before the vaccine was out, next one was 15 or 16 I think, the other two I can't be sure as they were full grown and stray but I think one of them was quite old when I got her and I had both of them for over 5 years too. The older one had only two teeth left when we got her and was allergic to ordinary cat food and had to take steroids which shorten lifespan. The other one had a fleck in his eye which is indicative of neurological issues and eventually he started wandering off and got stuck behind a pipe and died. Being indoors would not have helped him live longer.

Best guess is that those 5 average to a lifespan of about 13 or more. Number 6 is 7 now I think and still going strong.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

My cat has lived under a highway interchange, had his leg chewed clean through, and been shot in the eye.

Well, they are red wolves, our security has spotted them on 3 occasions within the last 6 months, according to the logs. It appears that we're inside their hunting range. As long as they aren't causing harm, they don't bother me.

Exactly. We live on the border of the national park and we see black bears (there's a large sow who dens ~1/2 mile from our home), coyotes, boar, elk, and bobcats. They're great and we love having them as neighbors (okay, maybe not the coyotes, but generally they aren't too destructive). The occasional wolf sighting in the area is more of a treat than a threat, IMO.

Ill add my own bundle of floof.

Meet Scully

She's an adorable Tortoiseshell 5 month old kitten. She plays fetch with me and is in general incredibly adorable and incredibly crazy. My g/f has never had animals so she is a bit timid around her, but even she cannot deny how damn adorable this kitten is.

She is very personable (when she isn't in crazy kitten mode) and very vocal with little chirps and meows. She didn't hide at all when I brought her home and she takes to my lap quite often, usually when I'm playing video games or on the computer...naturally.

Heh, my best friend has a torti as well and they all share those caramel-colored stripes. Apparently tortoiseshell cats are almost always females.

Scully update: She is almost a year old and has taken to knocking things off of any conceivable surface. I tolerate this because she is totally a lap cat, and I love it.

Rocky is alive and well. I can't Dropbox at work so a piccie will have to be uploaded tonight. He's bigger, but long not large if you know what I mean. Spending lots of time indoors at the moment due to the cold weather. He's a food snob, doesn't like processed cheese but will eat the expensive stuff. Tuna is acceptable but Scottish smoked salmon is preferred. Except the little brown bits you sometimes get of course. He loves to be pampered as well, but if you stop scratching him under the chin he'll go and find someone else who will.

He lost some hair above the eyebrow. No scratches or bruising and he seems OK (eating, attacking feet, playing etc) but no idea what he did to lose the hair.

Cats are notorious for this. It's part of their charm, in a way. For comparison, Dogs like their own poop.

Nice cats, guys. My favorite animal.

I'd get one again but I travel a lot, and it wouldn't be fair to leave it for long periods. Sure do miss having one.

He's "chubby" compared to most pure servals, and his ears aren't as large, relative to his head. He's 23" at the shoulder and a little over 31lbs now, the vet says he's not likely going to get any taller but will probably fill out a little more by the time he's finished maturing. We took him to visit his family up in Kentucky and they had a great time. His dad is ~2" taller (one of the tallest servals measured in captivity) though a bit more lean, but he towers over his mother, an F1 Savannah. It was pretty cool, they sniffed and rolled around, clicking and chirping, then groomed each other. I thought it was fascinating that they remembered him and still recognized a family bond, after being separated all this time.

I asked if his mom could be adopted, she's a stunner, gorgeous spots, but they said she was a little aggressive around small kids and that's something we can't tolerate. My daughter pulls on Ramesses' ears and tail and chases him around, but he hasn't tried to hurt her, unless you count some vigorous head washing.

He's a serval and savannah mix (3/4 serval).
