Are My Clips Having Seizures?

I downloaded iMovie 2 last night. I'm using OS 8.6, with opdated FireWire and Quicktime software on my iMac DVSE (the first graphite model).
Anyway, after I import a clip, albeit 30 seconds or 20 minutes, the playback on the iMovie 2 screen is terrible. The people in the video look like they are having seizures! The actors are jumpy, the sound is obscured, and the video goes forwards and backwards constantly.
Can anyone help?

Try turning VM off and upping the ram to 64mb if you can spare it.

There is a preference selection in iMovie that allows you to set if you want better quality video but less smoothnesss and RAM or to have less quality and smoother video in the previewing of your clips.

Thanks for your help, but that option hasn't made iMovie work better.

Set your extensions to base, Test.
Most likely not related to your situation but MS curlizs something font will conflict with iMovie 2. Remove the font from the system folder.
