bought an unlocked iphone on ebay. can I jailbeak?

I bought an iphone 3g on ebay that the seller said was unlocked by AT&T. It doesnt have cydia or anything so I assume its true. Its on firmware 2.1. can I use pwnage tool to jailbreak or will that brick it?

If it's really unlocked, it already is jailbroken. You have to jailbrake before you can unlock.

edit: its not unlocked. I tried an t-mobile sim and didnt work

Yeah, you need to jailbreak to unlock.
