I've got the new ibook dualUSB, and I play a lot of FPS's on it, like Q3 and UT. In Quake 3, I get 36-57 fps, but in UT, in the time demo, I average 35 fps with a HEAVILLY tweaked .ini. When I see someone, my fps drops 5-10 points! Anyone here have a .ini they could mail to me if they play UT on a powerbook too, or possibly give me a tip or two?

thx, rampant

Sorry, can't help, but what did you tweak in the .ini? I've just been playing UT at 640 x 480 in order to get decent frame rates and would really like it to run better. Haven't bothered with tweaking in the past, but 640 x 480 is so hard to go back to since 832 x 624 has been the lowest rez I've played on my desktop for the last couple years.

Well, thses are the settings that matter: (I run @ 640 x 480, but it's only a 3 fps difference @ 800x600)

Note that this is not the whole .ini, just selected parts of it in no specific order. Replace the areas I posted in your UT.ini with mine, and tell me how many fps you acheive in the cityintro method.

Also note that I have 192 ram, and I use RAVE, so your timedemo might be different. It should be 34.x or rarely 35.x.

Your FPS drops so drastically because the processor needs to crunch out just that many more polygons to fill up the character in front of you.

Upwards of 30-50 frames per second can't be seen by the human eye, but having more FPS does allow better control. Since the iBook isn't a true gaming machine, I think 35-50 frames per second on a consumer laptop priced to sell is amazing.

I play UT on my TiBook and Pismo, and they get about the same performance. You might want to increase the value of "CacheSizeMegs" and allocate more RAM to the application accordingly.

You know, you should drop me a line at [email protected] . Often, the MacNN crew (being the lounge people) and I get together on Friday's and other times throughout the weekend for great games of Unreal Tournament.

Yeah, I get about the same, 33.07 fps average and 54.98 max with your settings. I checked before I changed anything and was only getting 20.73 fps average. I must say though, I think I'd rather play in 32-bit mode with less fps than in 16-bit; RAVE always looks so bad in 16-bit. Too bad the iBooks didn't have a Voodoo 3 in them (if that were possible), I used to play in 16-bit glide on my old Beige G3, it looked fantastic and played smoothly.

I just switched to 32-bit mode (in the preferences) and ran the intro again. I got 29.4 fps! That's not bad at all, IMO. It went down to 22.64 in 800x600, so I think I'll stay with 640x480 at 32-bit.

Over at the Xlr8yourmac.com BB Tycho overclocked his iBook to 600 Mhz with a 100 Mhz bus! He did some UT tests with some interesting results. He got about 33 fps average without tweaking at 640x480, medium textures and 16-bit. He then overclocked the processor to 650 Mhz (!!!!!) and got the same results! Apparently the video card became the limiting factor. So it looks like fps are going to be stuck in the low 30's no matter what.

I'm up for some UT, but can't serve until I figure out how to change the settings on my router.

Oh, and yes rampant your config helped a bunch, thanks!
