Considering many of the new iPod features are software based, why isn't there an update to bring the other iPods up to speed yet? Or is there one and I'm just not seeing it?

i was thinking the same thing. i guess things like instant music shuffle (which saves battery life), and other power saving features will not be present in 3G and below models.

MacNN -
Apple has released iPod Updater 2004-07-15, which includes iPod Software 3.0 for Click Wheel iPods, iPod Software 1.1 for iPod minis, iPod Software 2.2 for 3G iPods, and iPod Software 1.4 for original iPods. No new features have been added with this update, which appears to simply combine the various iPod software updates available, including the new Click Wheel, into one.

But does this provide any real updates for us 3rd-generation iPod owners?

From the link posted by -Q-:
Updates for iPod with a Dock connector and iPod mini
* Compatibility with iTunes 4.5 or later and the iTunes Music Store
* Improved playback performance
* Support for the Apple Lossless Encoder, to enable compressed music encoding at high quality

This update include the same iPod software (April update) for the older generation of iPods.

So not useful for everyone without the new 4Gen iPods.

This pisses me off that they have a different software version with improvements, but only for the 4G iPod. Is this to force you to purchase a new one if for instance you want better audible book playback? I would think the newer version (mini) iPods should do the same thing.

Sorry to get your hopes up. I posted before I read the details closely enough.

what i don't understand is why the 3g iPod's cant use the same firmware as the 4g.....is it an issue with the hardware that restricts it???

haha, I wonder how many people downloaded the software only to smack their forehead in disgust when they find out that it doesn't actually include any updates for the iPods that people actually HAVE currently. I know I did

All I can hope is that in a few weeks an update comes out for the mini that incorporates these new features. I want 'em!

Maybe some hardware, but the bottom line is Apple wants you to buy a new iPod. Why should they give new features to the old? It would only hurt their sales. Same thing happened from Gen 2 to Gen 3. The Gen 2s never were updated more than what was needed to allow them to use purchased music from the store.

yeah, this is the same type of thing as what happened when the 3rd gens came out. everybody (including me) with a 2nd gen wanted to have the new features, but for a few different reasons it never happened.

just seems to me that if they both have a clickwheel and similar hardware, they should be able to function the same. that's all.
