I know that under the wintel system, when searching the internet, the OS saves just above every annoying file onto your hard disk in a temp directory and can pile up consuming massive amounts of space. Does interenet explorer do this under OSX? I cannot find any files associated with my browsing. Might they be hidden and how can I then free up the space?

That depends on your browser, I think. I use OmniWeb, which doesn't.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Internet Explorer uses a file called Cache.waf (I think. I deleted IE from my system ages ago). The location and size of this file is specified in IE's preferences.
