So, I just upgraded my rig and was wondering what people use around here...

Nikon F4s (F4+MB-21)
Nikon AI-S 20mm/f2.8
Sigma 35-80/f4-5.6
Vivitar 28-210/f3.5-5.6
Nikon SB-25

Canon AE-1
Canon 50mm/f1.8
Generic 80-200/f4-5.6

...oh, yeah, got the F4 for 100 after trading in my old N90 rig

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

Nice collection.
Tell me. Why do you need both a 28-210, 5.6 and a 35-80, 5.6?
The Vivitar looks to be the best of both. Is it preference?

The Nikon F4s is sweet.
Do you scan your negatives?

I'd rather go all digital myself. I've had it with film, though I would love to work with some large format photorgraphy (someday).

http://www.largeformatphotography.info/

I diidn't mean to hijack your thread, so I'll get back to being on track:

I don't have any cameras right now, and it is sort of eating at me a tad.

Here is my pick for my purchase to get back into the game:

This will probably be my first purchase, to get me going. This camera looks to be the one that fits all of my initial criterea, and would serve my creative needs for quite a while.

Again, I would love to get into a pro system someday, but priorities! as they say come first.

Recently got a Canon Digital Rebel (after hearing many good things about it from people on this and many other forums). Just getting used to a SLR camera, but the pictures have been getting better (operator error, not camera).

I've got plenty of cameras, from my nikon fm2 to my 4x5 wisner field camera. But honestly all I ever use these days is my nikon coolpix 4500 or my gf's pentax optio s. Digital has changed everything.

Although I used to be a big hobbyist, time restraints have pretty well put that out to pasture. I would like to get back into it though. I have a Minolta Maxxum 7000 that I bought when I was in high school that still works as good as the day I bought it, and I have a Kodak dc3700 digital, that's an ok camera, although I wish it had at least a 3x zoom. I've been thinking about getting one of the digital rebels. Most of what I read about them has been pretty good.

Same here. I'm a newby with this stuff but I couldnt be much happier with the thing. Do any more expereinced people know of any good macrolenses or underwater casings. I'm doing research up north all next summer and the carnivorous plants, and fish would make good subjects.

Here is the Canon EOS 300D; Nikon D100; D70
compared.

That D70 looks sweet, but if you demand a metal
body, then the D100 still rocks.

I've got a Canon Elan IIe and a Canon Digital Elph Powershot S300.

Digital is definitely convenient, but I have two complaints about it: storage and color.

At least with negatives and slides, I can store them in sleeves in binders and never have to worry about them. Someone can come across them 100 years later and develop them. With digital photos, I'm going to have to update the medium they're stored on every few years or so. That's going to be a big hassle. Does anyone have any tips or suggestions for a simple, effective method of organizing and storing digital prints?

For the most part, digital cameras have decent color, but I love the distinctive look a specific brand of film can give to photos. Slides, especially, can give you some punchy, saturated colors. Digital photos can't. So, I have to go into Photoshop and much around for a couple of hours. Most pro photographers already do that, I'm sure. And I do that to a certain extent. But I really like trying for the perfect shot without digital manipulation.

Just purchasing overlap; I got the 35-80 back in 2000 and bought the 28-210 used last year... the 35-80 is the sharper lens - although I'd rather have all Nikon glass...

I use a really old Canon AE-1 with standard 50mm lens. Also a Canon wide angle lens and 135mm telephoto lens.

Oh yeah and a mountable Canon flash. This camera is 20 years old and hasn't failed me yet.

Panasonic DMC-FZ2 - only 2 MPixels, but has a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 1:2.8/4.6 - 55.2 lens (12x optical zoom, which equals 35-420 mm in a normal 35mm camera).

This is what I need, since my pictures only end up at a website

Review of FZ1 - ok, the FZ2 is a bit newer, and has the same features as the FZ1, but with an Program/Aperture/Shutter mode.

Edit: Corrected spelling.

I have an Elan 2e, as well and a Canon G3 digital.

I agree with you on the color bit. The G3 is a good one and it still lacks the punch. I took the Elan to Sedona on a hot air balloon ride and to the grand canyon and ran off a few rolls of slides. They are the most beautiful shots. There's no way the digital would have matched them.

Pretty good stuff yeah
The 85mm is an AF-D. The others are manual non-chip lenses, I'll have to exchange them soon as I'm going digital in the near future. (D100 does not work correctly with these old lenses )

EDIT: And I SOOO need a 35mm

Minolta DiMage 7i here.

Wish I'd waited for the Canon 10D to get a little cheaper, but oh well....has a great lens at least, even if the noise and battery life aren't the best.

macros for canon abound: canon 50mm f/2.5, sigma 50mm (whose max f-stop i don't know offhand), canon 100mm f/2.8 usm and non-usm flavors, sigma and tamron, i believe, with 105mm f/2.8 macros, canon, sigma, tamron 180mm f/3.5 macros (the canon and sigma 180s being USM/HSM). i have the sigma 180mm macro and it is a great lens.

http://tjclark.ath.cx/images/subjects/macro.html

what i shoot:

canon D30
sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 HSM EX
canon 28mm f/1.8 USM
canon 50mm f/1.4 USM
canon 135mm f/2.0L USM
sigma 180mm f/3.5 HSM macro

my site (check sig) has lots of pics that belie the "digital can't be punchy". shoot a quality dslr in raw mode and you can do absolutely anything in conversion + photoshop. emulating velvia is quite easy, for instance (search on "photoshop emulate velvia" or the like and you'll find many results, i'm sure).

IIRC it was initially sold in 1976. I dont know how long they produced it, but it was rated as a rare collectible when i bought it in 1990.

Minolta Dimage 7hi
Minolta 3600 Flash
3-piece studio lighting (500W each)
Random assortment of basic filters

I used to have a Canon A-1 with a bunch of lenses, but it was getting too costly to process all the film I shot, so I took the plunge into digital with the Minolta, and I've been very happy. I don't have any other product experience to compare it to, but I have no complaints.

I have:

Pentax ME Super body
Pentax 50mm f1.7
Starblitz 28mm f2.8
Soligor 85-205mm f3.8

I learned on a Pentax P30t, and bought this outfit on eBay recently when I had to part with that camera.

and:

Minolta Dimage F100 (rather noisy in my experience, which is too bad)

I'm currently deliberating between one of those new fangled digital SLRs and getting a good film/slide scanner and a newer 35mm body. I love all-manual SLRs but sometimes I miss actions shots due to the lack of auto-focus.

Some photos I've taken can be found here.
We need less Democrats and Republicans, and more people that think for themselves.

go dslr! having film processed is a pain whether you scan it or they do, and it takes too long. the only real shortcoming of the current $1500 crop of dslrs is wide angle, and something like the sigma 12-24 that i have takes care of that handily.

and nice photos. i like their look -- i'll have to go through all of them on a rainy day.
