What we know so far:

It will support Blu-ray (obviously), DVD±R/W, CD-R/RW
Backwards compatible with the PlayStation 2 and original Playstation
One 3.2GHz Cell processor—total system performance rated at 2.18 teraflops (uh, that’s actually about twice what Microsoft is claiming the Xbox 360 will do); it will have 256MB system RAM 3.2GHz, and 256MB GDDR VRAM at 700MHz
The nVidia graphics will be called the RSX (”Reality Synthesizer”), and will trump the Xbox 360 with 1080p (yes, that’s a p) graphics support.
Memory Stick Duo slot, and very surprisingly, an SD and CF slots
Bluetooth support with up to seven wireless controllers
Six USB system ports

Wasn't the Cell supposed to go to 4.7 GHz? Whatever. Looks nice, was hoping for 2 cell processors tho, you can never have enough power.

One thing is for sure. Why does it need to support 7!!!!! wireless controllers. My TV is too small for a 7 player split screen!!!

LOL, Gates is pretty crafty to tie in the Halo 3 launch with the PS3, but of course, IGN has reported that GTA is a PS3 launch title. Not that I like that game or care. I'm waiting for Metal Gear Solid 4, Silnet hill 5, GT 5, Devil May Cry 4, God of War (hopefully) etc... Oh yah... 2006 can't come soon enough....

Here we go again with this real time junk:

Activision has already confirmed that Spider-Man 3 would ship on next-generation consoles, but at Sony's 2005 E3 press conference today, we got to see a real-time Spidey doing his thing.

The character was amazingly detailed, so detailed in fact that we suspected he was from the last Spider-Man 2 movie. In fact, he was. Sony claims that the PS3 is so powerful it can run the computer generated Spider-Man from the movie in real-time, which may or may not be the actual character from the next game.

What, another game with overhyped graphics which turns out to be Just Another FPS in the end? No thanks.

I pray they make a old school version of the controller. It may be a knee jerk reaction, but that new one is hideous! Why would they mess with perfection?
Also, is it me, or does the Playstation 3 logo on the top/side of the machine look like the Spiderman font from the movies?

I'd believe it can render Spiderman.

I'm not sure it could render everything else at the same time.

7 wireless controllers, for what? Can the thing hook up to multiple TVs? cause if not, 7 people aren't going to be able to play a game all at the same time very well. 4 is bad enough in most cases.

It does look like a nice system.

[edit] saw the thing about two screens. That's cool.

I'm curious as to how you'll know which controller goes with which player. The XBox's system for managing that was pretty cool.

It all looks very cool, but I wonder how much it will cost. Honestly, shelling out $250-$300+ (or even more, according to some price points I've heard for the XBOX 360) just for a console with 1 controller and no games is getting tiresome. One reason I like Nintendo products -- other than the fact that, GASP!, I like their games -- is that their price point is a little lower. My DS plus 2 games still came in lower than the PSP with no games; ditto for comparison of the Cube with an XBox/PS2.

Oh well, guess I'm just too cheap to keep up with the elite gamers anymore.

You don't need to be a member to download the wmv files, just the higher-quality quicktime ones.

And if you download mplayer from versiontracker, no need to pollute your computer with WiMP.

Many sources have confirmed that it won't be caddy based for quite awhile now.

My best guess of what the PS3 will cost on launch day:

$299.99 US
$399.99 CDN (If our dollar sinks in a year, expect it to be $449.99 CDN)
$699.99 AU ??? (I have no clue on this one!)

I pretty surprised by the controller, I was completely expecting them to push the analogue stick out to a more natural position, like Nintendo did with their GC controller and the new XBox2 controller. Surely 99.9% of all games use the analogue stick more than the old direction pad?

Aesthetically I'm not digging the PS3 at all, not that it really matters, it virtually goes without saying I'll be getting one.

Looks very cool indeed, except for that controller. Ugh. I hope they make a PS3 compatible "Classic" controller as well. That new thing doesn't look comfortable at all.

the getaway stills look awesome - gotta get me a projector - and a PS3 of course

There seems to lots of talk about Apple working on the PS3

http://ps3forums.com/viewtopic.php?t=1977

http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2005/5/14/305

http://macdailynews.com/index.php/we...playstation_3/

http://www.mobilegamefaqs.com/newsstory.php?id=121

they do all seem to reference the ps3forum, but they all seem to be suggesting its probable that Sony and Apple are up to something - but what? I wanna know

Are we gonna get a form of OS X on Cell, or even PS3 on Cell running on Macs?

If the rumor about iPod and iTunes is right, I think Jobs must have been in the presentation, talk about getting good press and coverage for iTunes Music Store. I certainly, doubt it is a real thing.

The thing that surprised me about Cell in the PS3 is I thought there would be more than one core. Also, why is that we heard about the Xbox360 developer kits, but we have not heard about the PS3's?

I'm pretty shocked at the processing power in the Cell chip.

Have I got this right? The PS3 will have 2.18 teraflops produced by 1 x 3.2Ghz Cell processor, compared to the Xbox 360 which will have 1 teraflop produced by 3 x 3.2Ghz PowerPC processors.

Is that right, or have I missed something?

Maybe I'm the only one who's *happy* about the new controller? I personally hated the PS2 controller...so much so that I own an Xbox and a GC, but no PS2. Just couldn't hold 'em, and I'm an average sized guy.

This controller looks comfy to me. Honestly, it looks a lot like the old one w/ extended grips, which is great b/c the other grips were too short IMO.

I had no idea Sony would blow Microsoft (power wise) out of the water so badly...wow! I wish they'd come out at the same time, but I think the PS3 will lag behind in release. Sadly, the news about the GC is dismal.

What I'm hearing is that it's "2 to 3 times more powerful than a GC", while the PS3 is about 35 times more powerful than a PS2 Dang...c'mon Nintendo.

Maybe it's just me, but I think the N64s controller is the best of all time. So natural, so comfortable, even if it was very unconventional, and not all buttons could be reached at once (it wasn't necessary to reach all of them).

I absolutely despise the PS/PS2 controller... it just feels really uncomfortable and hard to hold.

The second best controller, I'd say, is the GCs... but it didn't compare with the 64's.

I'll never forget going Honey on Goldeneye... those were the days.

Other than the controller, which looks like something out of a 70's sci-fi movie, this system looks awesome. Love the design too.

Dont know about you guys, but the PS3 looks a lot better than the XB360(in every way). If i were to make a prediction on the winner, ill have to pick PS3 over XB360....althought the pre-christmas launch of XB360 might have dramatic impact on the outcome....

Me ? i wouldnt mind waiting for the PS3 over the XB360....any day.

The Ps3 looks much better in many ways, I like some things about the 360, I am not going to chose, I'm just going to get both.

Interesting. I found the positioning of the stick on the N64 controller to be totally awkward. GC controller is pure perfection, IMO.

You'll still have to choose..... which color PS3 you want. I'm torn between the white and the black. With all my Mac stuff, I've got enough aluminum. My entire entertainment center is black, so do I want the PS3 to blend in or stand out? Hmmmm...

As for the 360, you'll have plenty of ghetto faceplates to choose from
