How do i transfer my CS4 plug-ins to CS5?
Where do i drag them to?
and will they work?

I just ran into the same question and found that you can copy and paste from one plugin folder to another. One thing to remember is CS5 is 64-bit native so if you use some plugins that are 32-bit you have to do one simple step to make them work.

Go to PS CS5 in the applications folder and pull up its Get Info window. You'll see a check box for "Open in 32 Bit Mode". Just check that, restart PS and now it'll be running in 32-bit mode as long as you don't change it back. To revert back to 64-bit go through the same steps and uncheck the box.

I only use PS for photography and so I find 32-bit to work perfectly and isn't a compromise for me. I'd imagine most plugin creators are going to be updating their products to work in 64-bit mode. Until then just do what I wrote and what you have (if it's 32-bit only) should work with CS5.

It's worth noting as well that some of the standard plugins for Photoshop and other apps only work in 32-bit mode.

One of the best (and cleanest) ways is to create a new folder on your desktop for your old plugins. Call it "3rd Party Plugins" or whatever. Dump all the plugs you want to save into that folder. Then, create an alias to that new folder and drop the alias into CS5's Plug Ins folder. When CS5 launches, it should see those old plugins.

The reason for making an alias is for simple troubleshooting purposes.

So, the short answer is "In CS5's Plug-Ins folder".

Oh, and I'm talking about strictly plug-ins. Make separate folders for custom filters, brushes, etc. and drop aliases for them in the appropriate folders.

But what kind of speed differences should i expect now that i'm forcing a 32-bit mode.

In CS4, you were working in 32-bit mode anyway. So, unless you're now doing some extremely complex and high-resolution effects work, you really shouldn't notice any speed differences.
