I saw that. The debate on this subject is so stupid I can barely stand reading it.

Inconsequential side note...

Battlefield 3 is free for PlayStation Plus subscribers.

Just to sing the praises of PlayStation Plus yet again, here are all the titles that were offered for free in the first year of PS+'s Instant Game Collection service:

Notables (including recent additions):
- Infamous 2
- LittleBigPlanet 2
- Uncharted 3
- Deus Ex: Human Revolution
- Joe Danger 2: The Movie
- Just Cause 2
- The Walking Dead
- Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One
- Resident Evil 5
- Borderlands
- Bioshock 2
- Super Street Fighter IV
- Spec Ops: The Line
- Vanquish (completely underrated)
- Demon's Souls
- Sleeping Dogs
- Saint's Row 2
- Saint's Row: The Third
- PacMan Championship Edition DX
- Outland
- Retro City Rampage
- Scott Pilgrim

Best $50 I spend in gaming every year, and doesn't even count the discounts, like Arkham Asylum for $5.

Luckily for the next generation's Microsoft faithful, the other guy's are offering free games and discounts for subscribers in days to come.

Third console hubris illustrated again: I am an Xbox One dev. Ask me almost anything. : xboxone

"The majority of the masses care only about the console, except that the success of the Kinect carries much more weight to us. The sensor costs almost as much as the console to make."
$250 price hike for a mandatory accessory no wants? Genius!

Wii U: "Some Software Developers Have Become Pessimistic" Says Iwata - NowGamer

"There were so many games released by third party publishers for Wii U during the launch period, but most of them were converted from other platforms and therefore could not enjoy brisk sales," explained Iwata.
O rly?

Does Nintendo stand a chance this holiday? | GamesIndustry International
Yves Guillemot, Chairman and CEO of Ubisoft, is typically one of the biggest proponents of new systems, but betting big on the Wii U didn't work out well for the company. ZombiU, one of the most popular launch titles for the system with players, was not profitable, he says. Not even close. As such, he says, there are no plans (or even desire) for a sequel.

It was, in fact, because of that game's performance that Ubisoft decided to make Rayman Legends a multiplatform game.
I read somewhere ZombiU sales were around 400k. Ouch.

This might not end up as anything to do with gaming, or might not end up as anything at all, but Apple are said to be 'in talks' to buy Primesense, the people who did Kinect on the 360 (but not the One). Apple 'in talks' to buy motion control specialist (and Kinect maker) PrimeSense

So, Apple and Primesense to control what.. Apple TV for the full on jump around sensing? iOS or Mac OS X for gestures like a Leap Motion? Something else?

Would Primesense be free now to go and do 'their' Kinect with someone else, or would there be a load of patent stuff with MS?

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Depends on the title. Often around the year mark, it seems. They know the titles that you really want, you'll play when they're released. This has been better for playing games that you might have missed, especially like Vanquish, Spec Ops, Demon Souls, etc.

I think the point isn't the amount of time elapsed, but the fact that many of these titles are top-tier releases...for free.

This news made me groan a bit.

I'm not sure about the patents, but you'd assume that Microsoft has most of that locked down.

I'm going to assume it's for air gestures for the AppleTV revamp. Along with advanced Siri tech, that will be their solution to the restrictive 3 button remote that it has now.

If anyone's still wondering why EA didn't stand up for MS attempt to end used game sales, here's why:

For the first time, EA’s real-life money is mostly from digital sales | Ars Technica

The money shot:

The raw proportions are probably a lagging indicator, though. It's the speed and the direction of the change that's really striking. Across the industry, companies are showing huge gains in digital revenue quarter after quarter, regardless of how other parts of the business are doing. Sure, EA Games Label President Frank Gibeau said last year that EA becoming "a 100 percent digital company" is "inevitable," confirming what anyone watching the industry already knew. But if the current rate of retail-to-digital-shifting continues (though there's no reason to think it should, necessarily), EA will reach that "inevitable" 100 percent digital future sometime in late 2016.
2016 is less than half way through the coming console generation. I'm sure EA has a plan to make that date come true. Either they will move to digital sales on consoles, or they will just scale back their investments in console gaming.

Part of the digital money for EA is that they make more from iOS apps than their own Origin game system, mainly with The Sims Freeplay, Real Racing 3 and Simpsons Tapped Out games. The App Store Made EA More Cash Than Origin | Touch Arcade

The logical conclusion to that is to invest more in iOS games and less in resellable console games.

This rumor is too crazy not to post.

Microsoft will ‘reintroduce’ the Xbox One at press event - Handy Tips

Microsoft will ‘reintroduce’ the Xbox One in a live press event that is intended as a fresh start in their relationship with the media and consumers. They will directly address the concerns about the Xbox One and start generating positive momentum in time for the November launch.

According to an inside source after the E3 conference there was a massive and frantic ‘internal review’ of every aspect of the Xbox One compared to Sony’s direction with PlayStation.

The 24 hour check-in and disc-DRM policy was reversed to prevent the negative press becoming so widespread that it damaged the Xbox brand. Every other criticism has also been examined to see if it can be improved. Multiple changes have been made and Microsoft feel confident in a product they know the public will respond well to.

There have been discussions about creating price parity between Xbox One and PlayStation 4 by reducing the Xbox One price to $399/€399. Conversation has centred on bigger losses per unit sold versus loss of sales traction.

Microsoft will make public their plans for Gamescom later this week. It’s expected they will be hosting a press event presented by Phil Spencer, the vice president of Microsoft Game Studios and Phil Harrison, the corporate vice president of Interactive Entertainment.

Is anyone going to refrain from buying one or the other based on what we've heard so far? I think not. My choice will be based on what's the better product for me when they're actually available for purchase. All this hullaballoo is meaningless, especially with the evolving specs, terms, and features.

Is that because of big brother paranoia or not wanting to pay for hardware you may not use? I can see it being useful in certain ways, but I'm not sure how long the novelty will last. Obviously x-platform games won't embrace it as much, so it will be up to Microsoft to create compelling reasons to have it. Not sure where I stand yet, but I'll probably get whatever more of my friends buy. Unless, of course, they all buy the wrong one.

Mostly because of three reasons. One, I'm paying for something I have no interest in, at least, no interest in shelling out cash for and Two, there is no option to not have the accessory I don't want which I consider to be a massive dick move. As a consumer I can only rally against things with my wallet, and I intend to do so. Finally, the hardware quality gap between this current gen is laughable. The PS3 is a sleek, quiet and powerful machine, and the Xbox is a noisy piece of junk that took 4 revisions to get right. I'm betting on the PS4 being more of the same from Sony, quality piece of hardware.

I'm not keen on letting MS into my living room at that level, I don't care for it having to be always on, and I think its a waste that inflates the price of the console.

The only concern I have is with purchasing games close to the date of the release of the Xbox One. I haven't heard any answers on whether we can use our Xbox 360 after we've started using our profile on the Xbox One? If I start playing games on the Xbox One, can I go back and forth between the Xbox One and the Xbox 360? Because I see games being delivered just before the Xbox One release date for the Xbox 360 and then what if they have DLC?

Example Assassin's Creed 4 on October 30. If I play that, I finish it on Xbox 360, then buy an Xbox One, play some new game there and have my profile updated. Can I go back to the Xbox 360 and dowloaded the DLC for AC4 and play it on the Xbox 360?

This excites me. I had just finished Splinter Cell: Conviction when I picked up GTA IV for the first time and after coming from a game that does cover-based combat so well, it was hard to get into GTA IV. I just got Max Payne 3 last month and that was a blast to play through, so I'm happy about this.

Wii U hardware and software sales continue to go nowhere fast | Ars Technica

Sales of Nintendo's Wii U console have been poor all year, and the company's just-released financial results (PDF) for its last quarter keep the bad news coming. Nintendo has sold just 160,000 Wii Us in the last three months, about the same rate at which the console has sold since its historically bad January. The console has sold 3.61 million units worldwide to date.

To add insult to injury, the Wii U continues to be outperformed by its older (and cheaper) predecessor: the original Wii managed to sell 210,000 units worldwide in the same period. Nintendo sold 710,000 standard Wiis in the year-ago quarter, and the Wii U definitely isn't stepping up to fill in that half-a-million console drop.
Oh man.

The Wii was a success because it tapped the casual market. The very same market, mind you, that does not buy the latest and greatest hardware just cuz it's new. The sales they are seeing now are the core Nintendo gamer market. I can see the Wii U gaining traction around the holidays, but I doubt it'll sell anywhere near as fast as the PS4XBONE.

Victims of their own meteoric success.

There's a dearth of games because apparently despite it being 2013, Nintendo didn't expect HD game development to take this long.

Only the Nintendo faithful are going to buy a whole new system to play the next Zelda on. Only those people are going to care about big budget HD AAA games as well. A very large swath of Wii owners don't fall into either of those groups, and likely see no point in shelling out more money for another system. The sales numbers for this generation will reflect this, the Wii's success will not be duplicated, not by a loooong shot.

The best part is the Wii U is supposed to last this entire gen. The idiots waited too long. As it is the Wii was the primary Nintendo console for 6 out of the 7 years years the similarly launched PS3 was. It absurd. Wii sales plummeted in 2009. They should have already had something in the pipeline to greenlight for a 2010 or 11 launch at the time.

The Wii took everyone by surprise, even Nintendo. I honestly believe that they considered the Wii their last attempt at the living room console market, and suddenly they had a monster hit on their hands. Then the 3DS failure followed that, and the "safe" bet to make an HD Wii failed as well. I don't think they know what to do, and I'm not sure I blame them.

Nintendo is in a unique situation here - they need to make money on those consoles. MS has dropped billions on buying a spot in the market, and Sony must have lost something like that on the early years of the PS3. Nintendo doesn't have that luxury.

IMHO.....
Wii:
-Simple intuitive controller
-Friendly price point
-Very unique branding
-Twilight Princess (and casual friendly games) at launch

WiiU:
-Intimidating controller (has everything including the kitchen sink)
-Pricier than the Wii
-Confusing(at least for the intended audience) branding
-Not one first party AAA title at launch

Market conditions...... On the casual end of the spectrum, Nintendo has been outflanked by iOS and Android devices. At the 'core' end they face Sony & Microsoft.

With the WiiU, they have poured resources (development, marketing ,etc) into fringe features which barely matter to the audience, at the expense of the fundamental features. Personally, all they had to do was launch the console with *ONE* stellar title (a game like Twilight Princess or Super Mario Galaxy) and that would have driven sales. I think they might have gotten over confident and lost focus.

Cheers

PS>>I still really like my Wii for my retro Gaming fix(NES, SNES, Genesis) N64 titles i never played, all my GCN games and the few stellar Wii games.

A curious little coincidence caught my eye. Tom's Hardware has reviewed the Radeon 7730. This is not exactly newsworthy in itself - it's a further cut-down version of the Cape Verde/Radeon 7770 chip that's been out for a year or more by now, but something struck me looking at the specs. The Radeon 7730 has 6 GCN CUs for a total of 384 shaders, supported by 8 ROPs and a 128-bit memory interface, DDR3 or GDDR5 supported. The whole thing runs at 800 MHz. By comparison, the Xbone GPU has 12 GCN CUs, supported by 16 ROPs and a 256-bit DDR3 memory interface, and rumors say the GPU clock was recently increased from 800 to 853 MHz. The Xbone GPU is exactly twice the DDR3 version of the 7730, and since graphics tasks are generally perfectly parallelizable, we can assume that the Xbone GPU would get at least twice the framerates of the DDR3 7730 in these tests. At least, because the Xbone GPU has a slightly higher clock speed of both memory and shaders, but not really enough to make a big difference - and anyway the CPU will want some of that memory bandwidth. We're also ignoring the included eSRAM, which would likely require special coding to make use of - this is how a straight port would behave.

So, what are the results, if we double all the numbers from that review? So-so. Metro: Last light struggles to keep the minimum framerate over 30 even at 1680*1050 and Medium Quality. Bioshock: Infinite keeps the minimum around 40 fps@1080p, but only by dropping quality to medium. Skyrim is OK even at 1080p and High (over 50 fps minimum), while Tomb Raider needs to be at Normal to get the same performance. Company of Heroes 2 fails miserably, only 18 fps minimum at Low quality.

All in all, not to promising. Even if we assume that the eSRAM cache can hide the memory bandwidth deficit completely, thereby getting it up to GDDR5 levels, it's not pretty. The GCN shaders are efficient, but 12 clusters is just not enough. Games like Last light are probably not even playable at 1080p and Medium, and a strategy game with many units on screen will be a slideshow. At the same time, the split between Average and Minimum framerates is not too bad (except CoH2, which honestly looks like it's badly coded), so it's not about bad optimization for the arch that could be improved over time. That GPU is simply underspecced.

So a few months ago I mentioned that Tomb Raider sold 3-4 million copies and failed to meet expectations. I read recently they're making a sequel. And that sums up the gaming industry nicely.

Something just occurred to me...

So, a console, which retails for $500 has 8GB of RAM is relatively high performance and is connected. Is this what the home desktop PC is evolving to? If they get apps (which are relatively light weight compared to games) and let you pair a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse/track-pad to the console, is there any technical reason why these boxes cannot double as desktop computers for home users? They could even act as the digital hub.Right now the most powerful box I own is my PS3, and i primarily use it for media playback, which IMHO is underusing the hardware. I think ti would be great if it could do other kind of stuff(email, browser, social media, digital hub(pictures, home videos))

We're also hooking up these boxes to high res screens (as opposed to the olden days). So imagine an iOS like UI (or even LaunchCenter for Apps) with an app store offering productivity, games, etc. It could be overwhelming and complicated to market, but is there any reason why this is not a viable alternative to desktop computers? (as opposed to doing things like video compression, coding and other highly specialized stuff maybe) I'm referring to average home users. (Come to think of it, high end imaging work could fly on these boxes as well)

If there's going to be a virtual store for games/music/movies, why not just have general purpose apps as well?

Cheers

In many ways the design of the PS3 and the Xbone point towards the future of desktop PCs: An SOC that combines CPU, GPU and various support chips into one, and then complemented by a fixed set of RAM and flash storage. MS clearly wants to push some sort of apps on the Xbone, but I don't think they will replace a desktop or laptop for "doing actual work". I tried putting mouse and keyboard at my HTPC, but it was just too uncomfortable to sit there for any length of time.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

I wouldn't want to code on that setup thats for sure, but there's no reason one couldn't do so. If Sony could let users dual boot into Linux on the PS3, why not? But regardless of that, for all those people who primarily use iPads at home these days, I think this could be the new 'home computer' (as opposed to the traditional desktop PC). (The iPad is the new *personal* computer (ie individual)).

And if we are heading in that direction, a keyboard and mouse could be optional, image an interface based around Kinect and Siri for home users?

The PS3 has a web browser. I actually bought a keyboard designed for the PS3 to use with my home theater PC.

Nintendo still selling Wii U at a loss | GamesIndustry International
Those holding out hope for a Wii U price cut to combat system launches from Microsoft and Sony may want to brace for disappointment. A Nintendo representative confirmed for GamesIndustry International today that the company's hardware is still being sold at a loss.
Assuming that means both skus (The $300 and $350) including the game pad looks to be as intelligent a decision as the kinect. (Remember the PS4 is only $399)

Papers, Please Review: Paper trail of tears | Ars Technica
Papers, Please is the latest in a growing wave of "serious" games that aren't educational, per se, but where the "fun factor" isn't immediately evident. As a border control guard in a fictional Eastern European country, your actions are mostly confined to shuffling papers and confirming or denying someone's entry into Arstotzkan. Often, that means finding fake and forged documents, which all of those charts and lists in your office will help you verify.

Check a person's passport to confirm country names, diplomatic seals, and code numbers. Interrogate the person when things don't match up. Make a decision, then let the next person up to the window and repeat.

A plot centered on a political uprising quickly emerges on top of this daily grind. You get to decide whether you cast off your allegiances and join the resistance, helping "bad" guys and risking your job, or be a good little booth supervisor and reject the winds of change (which brings its own consequences).
I've watched a few videos and the gameplay is very dry but its oddly gripping. Despite what the author notes, it is available for Mac and is $10. The graphics are reminiscent of old school Carmen Sandiego with a depressing color palette.

I'm not sure what to make of this yet. It sounds awesome.

Just look at the image above. It's not just a pretty backdrop full of empty shells. Every little thing you can see is a real thing. You can walk into the corridors of those buildings and look through each of those windows. You can pilot each of those spaceships. You can live inside here. And it's just an infinitesimal fraction of this universe.

The scope of this "game" really seems to dwarf everything before it. The outstanding engineering and architecture of everything, the structures' impossibly detailed interiors, and the space ship design are so stylish and gorgeous that it feels like you are inside the classic illustrations by British sci-fi master Chris Foss, Ridley Scott's Alien and Blade Runner, and Ralph McQuarrie's Star Wars designs all mixed together and rendered in the vibrant and crisp 3D style of James Cameron's Avatar.

The massive scale of the universe itself is overwhelming: every element, person, ship, station, moon-sized factory and planet is interconnected in a real ecosystem. Everything can be affected by creation and destruction, trade and battles, harvesting and manufacturing processes.
That's quite some hype.
