Thanks for the help,

I would like to be clear after reading the apple site I am still not 100% sure that If I buy a new PB15inch I can drive the apple 30" display at "full" resolution.

I called apple store and got a "yes", " I think it can " and a "no, you need a G5"

I will buy the display tomorrow and am still trying to decide what I need to drive it.

Any clarity would be helpful

thanks

Ian

In the 15" you'll need the 128MB VRAM option.

From the footnotes on the "Graphics" tab of the powerbook page on Apple's site:

30-inch Apple Cinema Display compatible only with the 17-inch PowerBook G4 and the 1.67GHz 15-inch PowerBook G4 with optional 128MB of graphics memory and dual-link DVI functionality

The answer is yes or no depending on whether you have the stock 64MB video card, which is no, or the built to order card with 128MB and a dual-link DVI port, that's yes. Check the system profiler to see which you have. Here's a link to the Powerbook specificatio page.

We need pics!

I always wondered what a 15" PowerBook looked like next to a 30" Display.

Although... you could've gotten 2x 23" Cinemas and a DL-DVI splitter for a cool 46" span instead of only 30". Hehe.

About doing it yeah, but why isn't it possible? I read that Dual Link can be split into 2 separate signals for a dual display. Using 2x 23" Cinemas you could get an effective 46" span.

do take note that 2 x 23" ACDs do NOT give you 46"... u will need 4 x 23" to do tt provided they are arranged in a 2x2 manner... diagonals r tricky aren't they =P

I suppose a graphics card might be able to be programmed to do so, but basically, no, that can't be done.
