I have an old Magnetic Data 120gb 5400rpm IDE 3.5 inch drive.

I am trying to use this drive as an external, in which case I am going to need an external hard drive enclosure. Now the problem is, i cant find any that are aesthetically pleasing (mac esque) and well rated (as in durability).

I have given up on trying to find budget enclosures for around $20. I am willing to spend upto $50 for one right now, as long as it looks good and has a good user rating.

Any Mac users out there ever have to get any enclosures?

"Looks good" is somewhat subjective.

Try MacAlly or OWC. Most users here (myself included) have been happy with them.

knock yourself out.

but $50 is pretty mid range for aesthetics. if you want nicer, esp if you are looking for firewire rather than usb 2, you may have to look at spending more.

I've had several different enclosures and think MacAlly makes the best. It's very minimalist.

I agree with the MacAlly. I've got three and one Coolmax. The Coolmax actually gets hotter. I've also had several other "bargain" enclosures die on me. Amazon actually sells them for a reasonable price and I use my Prime membership for free shipping.

Do you like any of these?

They're all FW400+USB2, well reviewed, and under $45.

Don't go by looks...the critical component is the chipset. I've had good experiences with Oxford chipsets while many of the cheaper brands have had problems.

Here's a partial listing (scroll down a bit) of manufacturers and chipsets:

The third one is the Macally. I've got three and all work well, two for almost a year.
