lowendmac.com is a good site to reference for questions like this. In particular, here's the page for the very last G4 Powerbook:

17" PowerBook G4/1.67 GHz (Oct. 2005)

It states:
Supports up to 2560 x 1600 on external display. Allows mirroring to external display or extended desktop mode
I thought all Powerbooks could function in closed-lid mode, but I could be mistaken. The lowendmac.com page doesn't explicitrly state this.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for that! that means it will support the current 30 inch ACD.

So question 2 is answered... how big an external display...

but still need to know if it will operate in closed lid mode.

Thanks,

nina

I use my 17" PB G4 (latest rev.) to power a 23" ACD in closed lid mode. Works like a charm, I don't even have any temperature issues.

Nice user name btw.

There shouldn't be any temperature issues either. Apple advertised closed-lid mode as a feature on the 17" PB G4. Just like on all other aluminum PBs.

PowerBooks have been able to do this for over a decade. Even my first PowerBook/Mac (first-gen PowerBook G3 Kanga) could operate in closed-lid mode. So yes, it'll work.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

There is a persistent rumor that closed lid mode is bad for Macs. It needs to be stamped out where ever it rears its head.

If that rumor was true, my PowerBook would have died years ago...

17"s run cooler than 15"s too.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....
