I hate to contradict anyone on a highly subjective opinion, like yours, but England is by far one of the dullest, most uninteresting of the many countries I've been to. The people are very nice though.

Love the UK. Rich in cultural hoopdeedoo. In terms of Art, anyway. What we got we gotcher RSC, Yer NT, Yer Globe, yer fringe, yer Edinburgh festival, even yer West End ain't so bad, yer Sadlers Wells, Yer Royal Court, yer Almeida, yer Swan, yer Bunch of Grapes and Zetland... ooop. Thems is pubs. Yah gotcher Tate, NG, NPG. You gotcher ar-kee-tek-chure (I really dig that Wren dude), you gotcher Nat'l Library what ROCKS, you gotcher V & A Museum, Natural History Museum... OK. Most of what I am listing is in England- I'll not ditch the rest of the UK, though. One of my favorite visiting spots? Shaw's house. Dig Canterbury, too- you know- that whole Kit Marlowe thing... and I have a habit of talking to the artsy dead types in Westminster. Larry Olivier and I do chats whenever I'm down to London. Which is not, In my humble opinion, nearly enough.
Oh. RIght and something else I didn't know last time I was in- Mastrap has digs there. Know what that means? I ain't paying for a hotel room next time.
In short- if you were bored in the UK, you were WORKING at being so. I mean, the Naval War Museum ALONE is worth the trip.

The most low class girls in the developed world live in the UK. Go to Essex or Kent and take a look.
And commercialism is destroying everything British. The 50s to the 70s had everything that made Britain so cultured. The hippies, the punks, the mods, rock and roll, psychedelia, Monty Python, The Goons, Benny Hill, Morecombe and Wise.
Now our celebs are 18 year old gays from Popstars who can't sing (and the UK had the best REAL artists in the world), American style McDonalds and Starbucks have invaded just about one in every five shops. Kids dress like they were brought up in an Adidas factory and are ready to stick a knife in you for a cellphone. Education, health care - all in a terrible state due to years of of mismanagement by a government who intend to sell them off to private companies even though it has been proven with Railtrack that private companies can't run sh-it.
That's why I'm leaving the UK. It was great at one point. It is still the most liberal society in the world. But it has been betrayed by American style youth culture and commercialism. Too much of one thing is no good. Balance is the key.

How can you call the UK dull?
Sure we have some dull weather, but have you been to York, or Edinburgh??? Two of the most beautiful cities in the world, IMO!

El Pre$idente...
The gay remark was not cool. Not cool at all!
"It is still the most liberal society in the world." - Maybe that is why you are leaving.... too liberal?
Sorry mate.... just thought that remark of yours was a little out of character!
I respected you as one of the good guys on the boards.... don't lose that respect now!

I say that not because of homophobia. I say that because the music industry is now actively recruiting young artists 'because they are gay' and not because they are talented or their careers will last longer than 15 minutes. They are employed because they are easy to control and appeal to girls and gay men alike. As soon as sales dwindle they are dumbed and the next young gay guy takes his place.
There was a time when someone's sexuality didn't matter. George Michael, Elton John and many others made great musics and gave good performances without being exploited in the above manner. Their sexuality was a private matter. That was when the British music scene had class and produced the best pop and rock music in the world. All the biggest acts came out of that.
Sorry if my initial remark wasn't clear.

The landlord was a gay Lebanese ex investment banker who made the world's finest tabule. He had a nervous breakdown and decided banking wasn't for him anymore. So he let out rooms in his ginormous flat and lived off the money. We were four flatmates and when I've got the time I will write a sitcom about it. We had it all, love affairs, hate affairs, people dieing, people shagging people they shouldn't, loads of drink and always, always excellent food. We all paid into a kitty and shared the cooking. The roast tomatoe and peanut butter soup recipe originated there. I loved living in that house. And, it was only two minutes to the Kings Head for live music and late drinks. Good times they were.

One. That was the death I was talking about. One of our flatmates, an American, had an issue with his brother's death who got killed piloting a light aircraft. He was a really, really nice guy but was obsessed with finding out the "why". He killed himself with an overdose of cocain while on holiday in Amsterdam. The freaky thing was that I had asked him if it was ok if a friend of mine could stay in his room while he was on holiday. The the police from Holland called - and I had to tell my friend he was sleeping in a dead man's bed. I moved out soon afterwards.

who cares if they're 'low class' girls? I mean, it's one thing not to be interested in a girl because she's ugly or just plain boring, but what does class have to do with it? If she's hot and smart, would one's parents not want you to date her b/c she's not in one's own 'class'? not being from England myself, hopefully someone can enlighten me on that cultural point. thanks.
