I had my surgery on my right knee to repair my ruptured ACL on Monday and I have been home recovering all week. Today i got a phone call from work and I was informed that they were letting me go. Argh!!
Having surgery and getting sacked in the same damn week.
WTF?
Sorry, I just had to vent.....

damn, that sucks man. my friend is recovering from knee surgery as well, he tore the acl clean off the bone ! but getting "let go" on top of that really does suck. good luck with the recovery and the job hunt. things can only improve from here on out.

WARNING: More ranting ahead:
Welcome to my world
I injured my knee a month and a half ago, I called my job and told 'em about it. They (my former employer) canned me via e-mail after being out the first week. My knee is still messed-up too, but now my phone's either been shut off or is malfunctioning. I can't get anything done at all. I'm supposed to set an appointment to see an orthopedic specialist, and I'm supposed to get my unemplyment/disability stuff settled, but I've got no frikkin PHONE!!! Plus I usually access my e-mail through AOL and I got TOS-ed.
It's like the whole world's against me, I swear.
Anyway, hope that makes you feel a little better about your situation. You don't want to be in my shoes right now, believe me.
Incidentally, when you went for surgery did you notify your employer before-hand and inform them you'd be out for a while? Did they approve some kind of leave or something? I don't know that they can do that if you made arrangements with them or something. Think about talking to a lawyer. Find out if said lawyer will work on a contingency basis (I.E. he doesn't get paid unloess you win said settlement)
I've looked into it, and I could possibly persue a civil rights lawsuit against my former employer, but I've deliberated it, and (for me anyway) it just seems like too much of a hassle.
It frightens me how many stories like this I've been hearing/reading about lately. I think employers are getting away with way too much bullshiAt lately.
Whatever happens, I hope everything goes well for you.

I'm very sorry to hear the you were fired, allmodconz. That was a totally a bad move on the part of your employer. I hope that your knee is healing properly. Just try to be patient with the healing process. When it's time for physical therapy, treat it like a job and work hard.
I pray that you will find another job quickly. Hopefully you will find something even better. May you look back on this and say it was all for a good reason!

Aren't there empolyment laws to prevent your employer letting you go because you have a knee op? Are you in a union or something that might help?
Sorry to hear about your circumstances. Hope you recover soon.

I was just thinking the same thing...
I 'm hoping it is not a MacNN thing that will 'get us all in the end'. I like my knees as they are....
*P.S. Allmodconz, hope the knee heals soon and you get something sorted work wise!*

I think a lot of knee problems will take down lots of people... running, and other physically-strenuous activities involve lots of unfortunate pounding of the knee joint, which really wears and tears on the old thing.
Me, I've been on the couch all week after having surgery to extract my four wisdom teeth... at least you can eat. Though if you don't have enough money to eat, that would not be a good thing...
Go ahead, vent, this is the internet.

Funny you mention that because my phone has been out this week too. Just my home phone though but I can still get online(DSL). My cell still works. I'm just pissed off because the circumstances. I can't even walk from the den to the kitchen much less take a piss without leaning against the wall and holding on to something for balance. It's just complete bullshit.

I notified my employer 3 weeks before i had surgery(basically when I scheduled it) and they approved it. I was out all week just like I told them. I took a 4 day vacation 2 months ago and I was basically told I have been out of the office too much lately(*cough* my boss has taken 3 weeks off in that time*cough*) even though I am under my allotment of sick/leave days and vacation days for the year.
I find it completely insane that companies think they do you a favor when they give you time off even though you dan=mn well earn it and then they tell you when and if you can use the time off. I tried to take a vacation earlier in the year but was told it wasn't good for the schedule. So I take it later and am fired because of it. Boy am I glad I took that time off and also had the surgery right away.
Now I have to worry about COBRA and all that ****.
I won't be filing legal action against them b/c if I won I'd have to go back to work there and I don't want to do that. In the week I was out, someone broke into the office and stole my bosses computer. Karma is a bitch! The office will fall apart without me so I am living with the joy of that.
****ers.
Thank you all for the kind words.
Much aporeciated.

It doesn't take too much force really, just the right set of circumstances... I dislocated my knee pretty badly playing touch football years ago. Went up for a ball, got pushed from behind, and landed in a slight depression in the ground. Instant screaming.
I took a week off, but didn't get fired for it. My boss was the one who pushed me, so he couldn't very well fire me for it.

If your employer is required to participate in FMLA (family medical leave act) - all you need to do is get the days you missed approved by your doctor. Then, you cannot be penalized in any way for your absence.
I think FMLA only covers businesses with 100 or more employees - but you might want to double check that.

my employer fired me after being out for appendix surgery. apparently, having your appendix attack while on the job isn't a good thing, cause I guess it costs' tons of insurance money. bastards.
