I've heard that you're able to route your gmail e-mails throgh Apple's Mail program. I've attempted to do this, but am really unsure how to find out all the info Mail needs (e.g. is gmail a POP account?).
Thanks

pop account.
pop server: pop.gmail.com
send mail server: smtp.gmail.com
You need to authenticate to both using your [email protected] and the password you use to log in.

Just in case you were wondering, today Google began rolling out IMAP support to GMail users. I have it on one of my two accounts, and it works perfectly. Three cheers!

They (Google) had an issue with the gmail trademark in the uk. As far as I know it is still unresolved. The early uk google email addresses were given as [email protected]. Then when the trademark issue surfaced all our emails set up in the uk became [email protected] however the emails arrive even if the are addressed to [email protected] - I don't know what difference that will make to the mail client but to sending and receiving emails it makes none.

What does that move from POP to IMAP mean to the "I just to get my mail and not to deal with protocols of any sort" kind of user?

Not too much since the screenshot shows POP and IMAP settings are separate.
POP should stay on and I assume IMAP will be disabled by default. In other words it should carry on working for you.

However, if you would like to change it, IMAP is better than POP for webmail, because any changes made on the user end are reflected on the server. This means you can set up five different clients on five different machines and they will all show the exact same messages at all times.

Thanks for your replies. So, which would be the best to use, POP or IMAP? What's the difference?

IMAP definitely, especially if you intend to use Gmail on different machines (ie; your Mac, an iPhone, or through the web interface).
That said, I'm still miffed that my account hasn't got IMAP enabled yet

Let see if I got it… if I delete e-mails within Mail.app such e-mail messages are still available via gmail webmail access -they don't get delete from the server even when I told Mail to do it so… is POP the culprit for such behaviour?

I believe so. Or maybe that's just Gmail's interpretation of it.

Yes; that's a feature (an option, actually), not a bug.
