how do you sleep?
i wake up EVERY night, usually around 4am (this time:6am)

what do i do? lately, check the macnn forums, post a few (hopefully) helpful replies, then last, The Lounge for posts like...this.

anyone else wake & post???

I have my iMac scheduled to autostart at 6:45am EST in case it gets turned off the previous evening. I have Internet Exploder, Outlook Express, and RC5 all in my startup items folder. IE goes to my NBCi page (any suggestions of how to open TWO web pages so that I could have my homepage and MacNN fora?), OE checks my emails, and RC5 starts decrypting. By the time I wake up (6:50) everything is set for me to read before I start getting ready for work.

I go to bed at 3AM... I wake up at 6AM... I leave the bed at 8AM
Comp wakes up at 6:30, loads Darkside, Audion, a few AppleScripts, Hotline server, WebSTAR if I feel like it, and sits there waiting for me with all the patience of a gargoyle, and the beauty of an ancient, granite statue honouring an egyptian queen... Ok ok, back to the point...
Shower, get on the comp, do stuff, while posting in the background. Hehe.

4 hours of sleep daily is enough (for me at least) when you follow your biological rythms (which depend on your birth hour).
There is an easy way to check your best sleeping hours : stay awake 48 hours and put on paper the times when feeling really sleepy (most people have these roughly every 4 hours). Then you choose the more convenient time (you have to correct it during summer time) for you and go to bed 10 minutes before. 1 cycle (or 2 for most people) is enough

I'm really struggling with this for quite a long time now. Ideally I want to go to bed at about midnight and wake up at 8 AM. But what ACTUALLY happens is I go to bed somewhere between 3-6 in the morning and wake up at 12 noon. Tried doing the stay up late thing, didn't work. When I try to go to bed early, I toss and turn for hours. Would appreciate some advice.

If you must go to bed early, have a little alcohol to make you fall asleep faster. Then you won't have a restless sleep.

The whole thing is everyone is different, and you just have to adjust your sleeping patterns... just get used to them.

Try a little bit of (non-excessive! - it can be dangerous) sleep deprivation if you don't have to drive or operate heavy machinery for a few days

Do that every now and then and you'll sorta get used to less sleep... know what I mean?
Only works for some people...

Sleep at about 3 and wake at about 7-8, then brush my teeth and then go to class and maybe I will eat breakfast later.

get in bed about 9:00 to 9:30, read to 10:00 or 10:30, sleep 'til about 7:00 or 7:30, leave for school about 8:00

Sunday thru Thursday night: Go to bed at 4am.
Monday thru Friday morning: Wake up at 7am. Computer is in my backpack awaiting school.

Friday and Saturday night: Go to bed at 5-6am.
Saturday and Sunday morning: Wake up at noon. Computer is on my desk, on, and facing me from last night.

Whoa� not much sleep for a few people here. Also, to Fred CHOTTIN: I'd be curious to know more about this biological rhythm thing. All I've really heard is to get about 8 hours a night - more when I was a teenager (not that I ever did!). These days I can get by fine with 7 a night; a bit more than that and I feel great, but less will turn me into a zombie (especially those all nighters� ugh).

My mom goes on about tht natural body rhythm vibe...but have to get up early for schol. Not for choice.

Sheesh, some of you people are getting seriously less than your healthy 8 hours of sleep.

Me: Bed at 3 or 4am. Wake at 10 or 11am.
The nighttime is the right time for fun.

How many hours can you operate on? If I get less than 5 hours, I feel nauseous in the morning. Although 5 hours + a mid-day nap can work out ok.

I usally get about six hours of sleep each night...and it's not enough! But considering my hectic schedule that's about the best I can do. It catches up with me by the end of the week so I just try to get some extra hours in over the weekend.

Hmmm..I probably get about 6 hours of sleep. I stay up late talking to my boyfriend on the phone ( which is worth it )

If you want good sleep...

DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL before going to bed.

I've never suffered from insomnia. I know quite a few people that have and it just wrecks them. I sleep about 6.5-7 hours per night. I've always been able to get up in the morning (except for class during college, but that's different). Going to bed is hard. I always fight it. My girlfriend hates me because when I do wind up going to bed, I fall right asleep--and start snoring.

In bed at 10:15 on a work night- read 'til 10:45 or so (until my eyes cross and I can no longer keep track of the page) up at 5:50am. No wake breaks. If the baby lets me, I sleep well. Weekends are pretty much got to bed when tired- read- up when the baby and wife get me up (which, as I get older, is earlier and earlier).
Used to love naps. Now there does not seem to be enough time in the day. No complaints.

I normally catch about 5 to 6 hours of sleep a night; the need for a reasonably large amount of sleep appears to run in my family, from what I can tell.

During weekends, this can be much longer, though -- I have been known to get 10 hours of sleep on a weekend night, although this is somewhat rarer since I've had to start working for part of or all of the weekend.

I can't wait till summer, when I'm taking some time off work, a fair bit of which will be spent getting sleep and sleep and more sleep!

I like to stay awake until my body fights me for sleep! Then I make sure that I sleep on a 1.5 hour cycle. None of that other stuff works for me. As long as I get, 3, 4.5, 6, or 7.5 then I'm set to go. I just pulled an all nighter so, I'll just sleep until I naturally wake up, which lately is when the construction crew decides to shake the whole house at 9!

Yeah just save the URLs of both pages and put them in your startup folder instead of IE.

It is called the circadian rthythm which operates approximately every 25 hrs compared to the 24hr period day so that explains why we always seem to need an hour more sleep each day. But last time I checked, this might of changed.

sleep? What's that again?? Is that when i finally get done with papers at 2 AM, work off the hyper adrenaline, and crawl into bed with my boyfriend to crash untill classes the next day???
If so, I usually go 3 AM to 10:30AM on weekdays
6AM to 2:30 PM on weekends. Awwww that's nice... even if you miss meal times and have to fend for yourself! (mean ol' dining services... you'd think they'd figure out breakfast on weekends is pointless at a college!!)

Sleep is optional in college if you've got a heavy load of classes. Just recently I was awake for around 100 hours continuously working on various projects and going to classes. Suffice it to say, I got the work done, but I don't remember much that went on after the second day.
